My Son's First Deer - Handi 270
« on: November 27, 2010, 03:41:34 PM »
We got out early and could hear rustling in the cornfield under our blind, but couldn't see anything.  At first light my son whispers - Right there Dad, deer!  We see 6 ghostly figures eating corn, the bigger one about 30 yrds from the hootch.  I talk my son into his aim, there is a tree blocking the neck and shoulder.  He aims for the ribs, shoots.  The doe jumps and staggers about 25 yards, then flops down.  We climb down to take a look and find a nice fat doe.  Nice deer for my son's first deer.  He's 14 years old and was proud about his first kill.  I showed him how to gut out his deer and found that he broke the last rib and turned the liver into jelly.  The ole $125 handi in .270 that I bought at a yard sale did the job well.  My 300 win mag has been quiet this season, but that is fine just to see my son's face while his 2 grandpas bragged him up today.

Congratulations to that young hunter.  He will be hooked for sure now! ;)
Try to look unimportant.   Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Thanks for all the replies - my son got a kick going through them all.  Evoc we did one better, we had some steak and eggs to go w/ that root beer while everyone else was freezing out in the woods (first 20's morning in Michigan that day).  Will not get a chance until Smokepole season to get mine - but that is a whole lot of fun in its right.  I just bought a woodsman barrel, looking for some of those orange disks to try her out - who knows maybe it will be 2 deer with H&R's this year . . .
