Lessons learned from this season.......
« on: November 29, 2010, 07:39:51 PM »
This is the first season I've trapped in this area of South Dakota. In my area the available animals to catch in numbers are racoons,muskrat,mink,coyotes/fox and beaver,in that order.I'm on the edge of the pothole country. There is very little runnning water here it's mostly sloughs.I'm going to gear up for coon trapping. There are lots of pheasant hunters here with dogs(our population triples with the arrival of non resident hunters). That will influence what I can use for traps.I'm going to run 1 1/2 and 1 3/4 coil springs in the water at pipe sets when the water season opens and Dog Proof Dukes on coon trails on dryland.220 conibears in trails or baited sets would be a disaster as would trail snaring with all the hunting dogs.
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!
