Different frame screws for different Encore butt stocks?
« on: November 29, 2010, 11:22:14 AM »
I just received an used TC Encore synthetic butt stock and it didn't come with the screw to attach it to the frame.  I thought it would be no problem to use the screw from my walnut stock (I also have an identical length screw in my synthetic pistol grip).  However, the screw was a little too long and would bottom out before seating.  So I added a thick washer.  Now it seats properly.  But after attaching it I started having a problem cocking the hammer.  It took some time studying the situation to find that the screw was going too deep in the frame and stopping a lever from moving before the hammer could cock.  Sure enough, when I backed the screw out the hammer works properly.  Only now the screw is sticking out the bottom of the stock so the cosmetic TC cap can't be attached.

So the screw in the walnut butt stock and the synthetic pistol grip are the same size, but the proper screw for the synthetic butt stock is different?  As an engineer myself, I consider this poor engineering on TC's part.  So now I have to find and order another screw for the frame, or have one trimmed down?

They are 1/4 20 socket head, buy one and cut it off till it works I had to do that on a number of stocks. The composit stocks take a shorter bolt than the walnut stock.

Yes, I went to a hardware store this evening and found it was a 1/4-20.  Glad it wasn't some uncommon, gunsmithing thread size. The screws I have are 2" and it looks like I really need a 1 3/4".  They only had 2" and 1 1/2" in stock.  Tried the 1 1/2 inch but it only goes on about 2 1/2 threads before it tightens.  I'll have to cut down a 2" to get more thread bite.

Surely you don't expect us to believe that you thought TC stood for Thompson Center, when we all know that it really stands for "Tinkering Constantly" ::).  If 'n it weren't so,...would we even be here. ;)
