Speeding up the 30-30 and 35 Rem Handi
« on: November 28, 2010, 04:20:35 PM »
LEVERevolution® (available mid January - 2011)  Anybody Going To Try It? I have some 170 grain Sierra FN bullets ordered and I'm going to give it a go.

Hodgdon® Powder Company and Hornady® Manufacturing have teamed together to answer the frequently asked reloading question; "Can I buy the powder used in Hornady LEVERevolution factory ammunition?" Yes, this is the same spherical propellant used in Hornady's innovative and award winning high performance factory ammunition. This fabulous propellant meters flawlessly and makes lever action cartridges like the 30-30 Winchester yield velocities in excess of 100 fps over any published handloads, with even greater gains over factory ammunition. Other cartridges include the 35 Remington, 308 Marlin Express, 338 Marlin Express and the 25-35 Winchester. The list of cartridges and bullets is limited with this highly specialized powder, but where it works, it really works!

And Hornady said it was the bullet that made the gain

With the 200 fps increase dangling in front of me for my 30-30 Toppers, I curious if the pressure goes way up with my 170 grain Sierra FN bullets?

these 170gr. sierra flat nose bullets, are they for pistol or rifle?  Sierra quit making the 170gr. hc 357 bullet several years ago.  I killed several deer with this bullet and it breaks my heart not to be able to get anymore. this bullet was loaded in a .357mag at 1430fps., and this was out of a marlin carbine.,thanks, bill439

Concerning the 35 Rem in a Handi, you can achieve considerable velocity with current powders, the same may be true for a modern 30-30 on an SB2 frame, I wouldn't do that with a pre-'87 cast iron frame and soldered underlug tho, the new proprietary powders they've been using in the LE ammo are designed to provide a performance boost at pressures safe for the weaker actions.

Sounds good to me, 2300 fps at the pressure indicated with a 170 grain bullet will work nicely.  ;D
