Titanium powder
« on: November 30, 2010, 01:22:11 AM »
Has any one tried mixing in titanium with black powder?
I know that titanium is used in fireworks to create a rain of bright white light.
My goal is to get an impressive muzzle flash. Any other suggestions?

First let me say welcome to the forum!

I would be concerned with two things experimenting with an unknown
that could cause a pressure spike causing catastrophic failure of the cannon
and the other is coating the bore with Titanium from shooting if it adheres and
is hard or can not be easily removed it will give a rough surface in the bore.....

It may look pretty in fireworks but could cause major issues in a confined space such as
a cannon.......or should I say possible petard?

I agree that you should be very careful about testing things like that.  If you really want to see what it would be like, and you have experience with fireworks, try mixing a small amount and igniting it outside of a cannon, preferably using an ematch and a pyrotechnic mortar (NOT THE SAME TYPE OF MORTAR TYPICALLY DISCUSSED HERE!!!).

I have friends that have done some of this sort of thing, but they know far more about pyrotechnics than I do.

I think I'll stick with a little 00 steel wool. It creates some nice sparks and you don't have to worry about it.

Lets not go any further into the pyrotechnics on this board...

I'd stick to just black powder. However, if you want some extra sparklies I've found that using cannon grade powder in a small cannon shoots some out past the muzzle blast and gives a nice effect at night.
