Need Shotgun Help From Board Members Please.....
« on: November 27, 2010, 06:13:31 AM »
I have been looking for a H&R 12ga full choke locally for some time and finally found one today. I got a good deal but the part of the transfer bar that moves up and operates the firing pin is missing. I have never had to send a firearm in for repair before and want to know if I should send this to the factory for repair, or if a local gun shop could make the repair? If I send it to the factory, any idea of turn around time? Can someone recommend a trusty gunsmith in southwest Ohio? Thanks for your help.
BTW, the serial number is NH484_ _ _.

If Ilion did the repair, turn around time isn't usually bad, a week or two if they have the part in stock, but they don't have all repairs done in Ilion any more. The part can be ordered by anyone from Brownell's and Numrich(although backordered now), Numrich offers a replacement, H&R lists it as factory install only, but anyone can replace it including yourself if you're the DIY type, Perklo's trigger work info in the FAQs explains a complete R&R of the frame including the t-bar(striker-lifter or striker assembly).

Thanks Quick. That is some good reading for sure. I haven't decided whether I will attempt it myself or not. I will let you all know.

Tim, I see that many of the parts Brownells lists for Handi's are "out of stock". This transfer bar piece for example. I need a hammer for a 2003 reciever. Do you have any idea how often Brownells gets parts in and how long it might be for things like the lifter assembly in this post and the hammer I need to be "in stock" and available at Brownells?...Thanks....<><....:)

I'd give Brownell's a call, they may know when they might be available. (800) 741-0015

I sent one to Illion for repair last spring.  It took less than 2 weeks if I remember correctly.  They fixed it and test fired it.  It cost about $10 to ship it to them pluse a box.  They covered return shipping.  I got it back and it was fixed right.  Just follow the procedure outlined on the H&R website.  This is now my favorite shotgun.  Goodluck to you.

Tanks Stumjmpr, I am leaning that way. I was really wanting to test some #4 buckshot with the full choke. I am hoping is makes a decent pattern as I want to use it for some thick woods coyote calling. Dang I hate waiting!

Numerich list the part aswell.

Pretty easy instal as I've had to do them a couple times.  Used some small wooden dowel stock for slave pins.

You're a little late, I already posted Numrich's links 3 days ago!  ;)
