7 PDR's at Isandlwana

Yep, there it is.

That is why vents are angled slightly rearward and no one stands to the rear of a cannon when it is fired.

One of the ways the historians located the position of the 7 PDRs at the  Battle Isandlwana was by locating the ejected primers.   The positions of the batteries has been greatly debated.

Interesting place, worth the trip.

Each of those white spots is a cairn of rock marking a mass grave.

Your standing here with your little 7 PDR  and 1300 of your Army buddies and the ridge on the horizon, from left to just past center right, is covered with Cetewayo's 20,000 strong Zulu impi. Only part of the  Iimpi can be seen as the rest are in the donga that goes of to the right, from the right of the small hill right center and out off sight to the right..

Here's the view from the Zulu lines,  from just about center in above picture just to the left of the little round hill right of center.

And those Impi don't think it's right that you have invaded their land, burned their rondevals and stole their cattle for no good reason.

They had never faced the Martini Henry under British disipline.

They did that day and it it didn't matter.  But then the British that day were in extended order and not the  Famous Square.  But then the  Zulu's weren't just armed with iklwas and assegai's, They had a fair number of firearms themselves.
