Going green
« on: November 30, 2010, 08:00:09 AM »
Well going green is all the rage these days . I had a thought about it and hunting . I hunt with a guy who only hunts his place . He has spent years setting it up like he wants  club house , skinning rack , tree stands and trails . When I started hunting with him it was gas powered atv's , then he went to Bad boy buggies golf carts and one John Deere gator all battry powered . I can tell you from experince you can drive right up to deer in a battry powered gator way closer than in a gas powered one.
Heres my thought - A hybrid pick up truck with 4WD . One you can set to run on battries when you are in the woods or field ! It would be both Green and useful  ;)

I've driven to within 50 ft of them when on my Tractor.  Tractors don't seem to bother them one bit.
I can't control my day, but I can control my attitude.

I agree about the tractor I to have gotten close on mine the diesel seems to be best over the gas one - go figure , but the elec. vehicles seem to not be noticed much at all.

A hybrid 4WD truck or SUV is a good idea.   All the current models are no more than glorified minivans or station wagons.   I would think it would need very heavy duty batteries as 4WD terrain shakes up a vehicle.

Green:  You may be on to something.....
When I'm working in the fields on my tractors, the deer may act wary, but continue to travel across the field.  Coyotes come out and sit along the field watching for an easy meal.   I've even had to stop for a hawk that swooped down and caught a rat right in front of the tractor.

You guys go right on ahead and do that. I'll keep using my Giant Terex truck like the one in the video here.

Mine runs on diesel, but the diesel powers an electric drive, so it's my kind of hybrid.

Used to use surplus Panzer tanks, but just can't get parts for them any more and all my scrap tanks have been picked clean.

Got a lot of good use out of Greyhound surplus busses modified to be all wheel drive half track and double diesel,  but preferred the one that I made to run on bunker oil. Lotsa torque on that baby. Sold the engine to a guy who wanted to put it in a ship.

Tried steam, but it was too temperamental and not loud or smoky enough, except one particularly good mountain engine that I used to power by stoking it with shredded car tires.

Truth be told, I've hit the wall with my projects and need to go green for the ice breaker I'm building. Conventional power won't cut it. Gotta use nuclear.
