Long/short action magazine interchangabilty?
« on: November 25, 2010, 05:10:16 PM »
I was wondering if there is a difference in overall dimensions of a long and short action tikka T3 magazines.
The reason I ask is I want to know if I can take a long action magazine and use it in my Tikka T3 .308 so I can get a longer COL. For example a 30-06 magazine to be used in a .308 rifle to get the bullets closer to the lands.

Thanks in advance.

Guess no one has both a 308 and the 06 chambered tikka T3 .
I have wondered too if this could be done . I too would like to load the bullet closer to the lands .
Then if there was all that space for the cartridge to move back and forth under reciol , would not the nose of the bullet take a beating , or worse the bullet being forced into the case with the reciol.
Darn good thing the rilfes shoot well with the free bore .
Have you tried loading just one round to the rifling ?

well, I guess I couldnt wait that long for an answer so I went down to a local gun shop who sells alot of Tikka's. They had a long action magazine and I brought a "dummy" cartridge with me. The magazine fits just fine in the rifle but the bolt does not go back far enough to pick up the case head. So... I wont work.

Mystery solved

So you would need to add material to the back of the Mag to take up some space so the Cartridge would be picked up by the bolt or modify the bolt stop .Then would you gain in overal length.
If the Mags were not so expensive I would tinker ,Then MOA groups are fine for this ol' timer .
