Anybody use a dog for squirreis?
« on: December 02, 2010, 04:06:05 PM »

I was wondering who uses a dog for their squirrel hunting? Any particular type of dog that's better. How do you train them?

Yes people do use dogs for Squirrels. You may want to post this in the small game hunting forum .  A lot of dogs will tree them.  tireman

Most people use a mutt breed referred to as a treeing feist or cur.  I just bought a treeing feist but haven't got him treeing yet.

about 30 years ago when i was a kid i had a noreagen elkhound  i dont remember trainning him he would go out with me with me bb gun. as i shot tree rats he just seemed to like it.he would circle the tree to keep the squirrel in sight and bark at them. i did learn that he would follow them from tree to tree. the best hunting dog i ever had.

he  loved to hunt.....he leave  steak scraps behind  if i headed to the door with a gun

but  he was  tooo smart for his own good
he started  just following  me......

I use my bird dog much to the dismay of my purist friends.  They all think I'm ruining him for birds but he just likes to hunt.  He won't necessarily find more squirrels but what he will do is get on the other side of a tree and get the squirrel to move to my side so I can get a shot.  Otherwise you're trying to chase them around the tree trunk or you have to sit very still.  I like to keep moving so the dog is like having another gun along.  He keeps them occupied and picks up the dead ones when they fall out of the tree.

The dog in my Avatar is Gus.  He's a Wirehair Pointing Griffon.  Points upland birds, but everything else he just goes right in on.  I've finally taught him to stay away from Porcupines but he still goes after skunks sometimes.  If I'm around I can call him off but if he's out in the backyard he'll go right at a skunk.

Great family dog and a versatile hunting companion.

I tried using my Bird Dog "KellyO", for Squirrel hunting but he kept falling out of the trees. I think we will fit him with a pair of pole climbers.

When I was a kid, my neighbor kid's mom had a miniature poodle who was awesome on squirrels.  Just let'm loose and listen....  Killed hundreds of them with the help of that little guy...  RIP Peety!

Nothing better than a white and black Feist.  They look like Rat Terriers. Or do Rat Terriers look like a Feist? Great dogs for squirrels and very intelligent pets as well.

I have a mt cur for squirrels and coon. I have used this breed for over 20 yrs and found them to be a good family pet and hunting dog. To train them it is easier to use a broke dog but if one is not there just keep them in the woods.
