I recently purchased a Howa 1500 in the Hogue stock. It is a 270 in stainless.....What kind of accuracy can I expect from this rifle...

Well, if it's anything like my three Howa's (well two Howa's and a Vanguard), you can expect excellent accuracy.

I also have three Howa's (223, 25-06, 270) and they also are excellent shooters. Great rifle for the money.

I have two Howas and both of mine will do roughly 1" at 100yds if I do my part.

I have a howa stainless steel Laminated stock in 270 and it is a tack driver using federal 130 grain serria gameking bullets.

Mine shoot minute of deer, nothing to brag about. Guess I'm used to my Savages.

My girlfriend's Howa 270 win shoots the Hornady's with consistant 1 moa, but the trigger is quite awful. This week I'll be replacing the trigger with a Timney trigger. I suspect, that this is going to lower the group sizes down quite a bit more.

You should expect 1.5 MOA to 2 MOA with factory ammo. These aren't target rifles. :-D

I find it strange that you first bought the rifle, then asked us the question about what kind of accuracy to expect.

You have plenty of answers on here, but seems you should have asked first before the purchase.

Despite whatever anybody else gets, I get sub moa consistantly with all sorts of factory ammo. This weekend I fired my girlfriends 270 Howa/hogue at the deep creek range and got a 1.75 inch three shot group at 200 yards with Fedral 150 gr siera gamekings. The rifle is the howa/hogue w/3.5-10 niko sterling scope combo right out of the box. I want to add the Timney trigger, because as good as it is already, with a better trigger it would rival anything at the range.

My Howa 1500 (which I sold last year) in .270 was MOA accurate right out of the box in 1994. Afer I added the Timney trigger, it was a lot more accurate than I could ever shoot it.
IMHO, best rifle for the money out there now.

Mine too, in 308. I haven't spent a nickel on it other than I replaced the scope. I guess I got lucky on the trigger, it's not like a timney but it's good enough I decided to use it as is. One thing I like that doesn't get talked about much is that it shoots offhand really well for me. It just seems to be the right combination of size, lop, balance, and I like the palm swell.

One thing I don't like is that in the field with a daypack and the rifle on my right shoulder I have looked and found the safety has been moved off the safe position. !!! Doesn't happen with any other rifle. Anybody else have this problem?

My Howa will shoot circles around my Savage. To me, the heavy-barreled 1500's are the best shooters to be had for the money. My .243 will do 1/2-3/4 of an inch depending on what i'm feeding it. The nice thing is that I did not have to do anything to the gun other than adjusting the trigger and touching up the barrel channel. Mine was one of the early walnut stocked varmint Howas. It came with a nicely grained walnut stock, 24" heavy barrel, 3 position safety, and a decent adjustable trigger. My neighbor has a Model 700 that has had a ton of money and custom goodies added to it and it won't consistantly shoot as well as my $499 Howa. The dealers around here say it's the best bang for the buck and they sell a ton of em.

I was going to buy a howa 1500 varminter in .308 win. the other day when i spotted what appered to be some rust spots on the bolt. the guy at shuler's told me that it was due to imperfections in the stainless steel that its made of. he polished it right of with some rubbing compound and said if you keep it heavily oiled it won't do that. but in my experience thats not a good place to have a huge amount of oil. He also said that i could get the bolt parkerized or nickel electrolized or something and it would never do that again. So have any of you guys experience this with your guns. And if so is it worth buying the rifle despite that problem as far as accuracy and how long the rifle will last. thanks

I've had my three for 5, 7 and 10 years, respectively. Two are blued and one is stainless. I don't keep them heavily oiled (like 4 or 5 drops on a rag, and wipe down the entire rifle), and I've yet to spot any rust on any of them.

No problem with mine either, 3 yr old blue and syn. 1500 lightning in 308. I don't baby it, it's out for a week or two at a time during the seasons. I'm not sure my bolt is stainless, I think just polished steel. Use a good product like CorrosionX and no worries, sure no reason to pass on buying it IMO.

I have several Vanguards and have never had that problem - never heard that respone from a firearms reatiler before either.

I just purchased a 1500 .270. I got a DEAL on it for $325 with a bi-pod, sling and case. I have yet to shoot it, but my neighbor has one and a Weatherby, and loves his Howa. I cant wait to shoot it.

I have owned two howas and they where both moa rifles,great smooth action real good rifle IMO.
