A friend of mine had a problem with dog poop in his yard. His
solution was to pour cheap canned gravy on it, gone next AM.

It used to be in Illinois where I live that if the dog(s) are running loose and doesn't have a collar on, then it is fair game.  Obviously you had to use discretion and if you knew the dog, you left it alone or took it home.

When I was growing up, the neighbors down the road had a bunch of dogs that they turned loose every night and penned up every morning.  They were hell on my fox/coyote sets while I was trapping...and I can honestly say that I never turned a live dog out of any of my traps ::)

Now supposedly they have passed a law that you can't kill a dog or cat.  The animal right's activists get plumb sideways at the suggestion.

Funny though, them damn stray dogs have a habit of getting run over...by little lead sleds going about 3000 fps

A few years ago I lived in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains above Fresno.  As one person said, people would take their unwanted or unmanagable dogs to the hill and chased them off. I think most were killed by coyotes etc but some turned ferrel and lived in packs and became dangerous to people as well as live stock.  They stalked hikers etc.
At the time I had about 6.5 acres which backed up to thousands of acres of hills. I had four horses plus to foals on the ground when someone told me that were dogs circling the foals.  I took the first gun that was hand, an old 22 Sears bolt rifle and headed out to see what was happening.  Sure enough, I went out to the pasture area and found two ferral dogs, 6-9 months old harrasing the horses.  Their mother had made a den in a small cave on my place and these two survived, at least until that day.
I shot them each with one 22LR from about 40 yards and they fell dead where they were hit.  The neighbor called the Sherrif and Animal Control both of whom told her that either feral or pet dogs can be shot if they harrasse live stock and that I was perfectly within my rights.

The whole scene was repeated a month later when my neigbors calves were attack by a beautiful Irish Setter and his buddy great dane which belonged to a guy that lived adjacent to his place.  A 25-20 old lever gun took care of the pets.  Sad to see them dead but losing a calf or two is losing serious money.

DC...was the old Sears gun a single shot or did it have a magazine in it?  Did the dogs react to the noise or try to run after the first round went off?  I might have to be in that situation some day and while I am a quick shot there is not much you can do to speed up a single shot bolt action rifle.

It was an old tube feed J.C. Higgins but had problems with a week firing pin spring which caused misfires once in a while.
When I shot the first one, which dropped dead in his tracks.  The rifle was loaded with older standard velocity .22's and really
didn't make much of a sound.  The second dog stopped when the first one was shot and looked around which is when I straightend out
the buck horn sight, ( the rifle was so old the sights wobbled around  :-\) and shot him as well.
I gave the rifle to a lady friends son which makes him the third owner of what I think is a 1957 vintage .22.... no the rust only lent character to it.

The wild dogs do not have the fear of man like coyotes.  I have been treed by a pack of wild dogs for  hours untill my family found me.  They had to shoot three of the dogs to get them to run off.

That kind of situation does not bring good feelings between man and dog.  I've had 3 come down on me way out in the country.   I tried to ignore them at 1st, but they kept coming in getting braver all the while.  I tempted them even more by walking away from them.   They were sizing me up, and I acted scared, and ran a little ways, stopped and turned with my S&W Semi Auto double stacked 9mm Pistol.   Opened up on the farthest one and worked up to the closest.  Wounded a couple and only got one down.  That was quite exciting 8).
Enjoy your rights to keep and bear arms.

Although I live in a rural area with superb hunting year around...it still happens to be a "blue state" and the rules are made primarily by "big city" types who live in one of the s large cities in my state, since most of the population is centered there and not in rural areas.
I teach hunter safety for the state and I must inform the trainees that even if they see a dog or dogs chasing deer..they cannot shoot..

Hunters should be familiar with the  " 3/S " rule.
