38-55 trade
« on: December 05, 2010, 06:05:24 AM »
Tryed to post this yesterday, but got timed out so will try again.  Trade with CW went smooth as could be, never a doubt on that. ;)  Just tryed it on a spare frame I've had laying around that has one SWEET trigger and she locked up perfect.  No light shining thru at the breech and the release lever comes all the way up, just perfect!  I'm looking forward to loading up some new Starline brass with some .380 bullets and giving her a go.  Now that I have 2 38-55 barrels, may look at shortening one of em up, not sure yet.  May leave em both long and run over to the Quigley Shoot this coming June :-\.  Anyway, just wanted all to know that I'm happy with the trade and I hope CW is just as happy as well.  DP

Sounds like a great project DP!  ;) FWIW, my 28" barrel shoots Cheycast .380" 325gr fine(1:20), but my 18" barrel doesn't shoot .380" (18bhn) at all, the few that actually hit the target at 100yds keyholed, so I'm moving up to .381" Hunter Supply which I have to neck turn the brass to chamber, an alternative to neck reaming the chamber. I think the Cheycast being softer bumped up enough to shoot good, plus they have a longer bearing surface, I think that makes a difference, both barrels slug at .3795" in the groove.

Thank you sir, and YES I am very happy with the deal!!  ;D ;D ;D

I got to the range with my new maxi today and I am happy to report I have another shooter!! I will post up a full range report in a moment, but this barrel fit its receiver perfectly as well. My old maxi got a new frame and I just finished fitting it. I have juts a bit of shelf squaring and found a weld a bit proud on the lug. The weld easily relieved with a dremel and a wheel and the shelf about fifteen minutes with a file and dykem. Now its snaps closed like a safe door.

Shooting revealed a different diet then my orig maxi. But the AA1680 loads with XTPs shot under an inch. Same powder charge with SSP 180's and 170's GDs opened up to just under 2". My new accurate 200 FTX bullets where the worst opening up to just over 2". That's OK as that's the fun of this thing. Mounting the scope in good mounts and rings, playing with barrel lockup till its perfect. Fitting the forend till its perfect, then moving to loads. I would like this to shoot the SSP's as I have such faith in them. For my new shorty I'm hoping the 170 GDs or 180 XTP's shoot good. as the shorter barrel should loose me some FPS so the lighter constructed, larger meplat bullets should make up anything lost to velocity.

Any how, this is for my other post,

THANK YOU DP!!!

The release lever shoudn't come all the way up. There should be a little play in it with the barrel closed.
