After the "Lead Pot Explosion of '04," I went on and melted down all my WW--before I just added them to the pot as I casted. Figured I would only have to melt them once that way, but if did slow down the casting process as I had to stop and skim out all the junk every so often. (In point of fact, this wasn't why the pot exploded--but I digress.)

So yesterday and today, about 3 hours total, I cast 42 lbs into 38 and 45 bullets. I enjoyed it and each time I finally ran the pot down--couldn't keep it filled and hot enough to keep casting. Also after about an hour I get tired and that ususally means I also get stupid. :grin:

Still have to size and lube them but should have enough for the two pards shooting 38's and three of us that shoot 45 Colt.

Now if it will just dry out down here in the Republic so we can get some shooting in....

Sounds good there CR. I'm still collecting tools for casting, but I'm almost there. The main problem is attention deficit disorder. I go to a gun store to buy tools and wind up buying toys!

Yup, figger castin's 'bout the most borin part of shootin CAS.

At least up here we got this thang called "winter", which is a good excuse ta cast, lube/size, 'n' reload.

Picked up four hunnert pound of wheel weights in the fall (10 cents a pound) 'n' turned some inta ingots. Intended ta cast 'bout 150 pounds but only got 'bout a hunnert pounds of 44-40s cast a'fore'n I runned outta interest. (Funny, the XL 650 arrived 'n' I lost all interest in castin

My problem is when I start up the Dillon SDB's the ammo is all loaded up in real quick like. The casting does keep me involved in the reloading process for a longer period of time.

Spent 45 minutes sizing and lubing last night and will be back again tonight. Figure about 3 sessions and I'll be ready to go

CAS requires all lead bullets so no gas checks.

Big John, it don't take many tools, if ya got the mould, you can get the rest at Wally World or a junk store. A hot plate, or camp stove, a pan and a big old spoon and you're ready to make bullets!!
Unlike Calamity, for me casting isn't just a means to an end, casting is an end in itself. As proof that it can't be too difficult: I can do it.

Butlerford is right You can cast yer own with a bare minimum of tools, an iron pan, a ladle, and a mold is all ya need to get started...and a heat source of course! I've done a lot of "runnin ball" over a camp fire in my day!

I've also owned a Saeco botom pour furnace and a Lee Hot Pot. But I really got exvited when I got this for a present:

That's pretty much the one I have, though it doesn't have all the room between the spout and base--mine has about half of what's shown.

I crancked out abut 700 .32 bullets yesterday in 45 minutes. Slowly ran the pot down but basically ran out of steam on my part :grin:

I am old to casting but has been all blackpowder. Have the molds for the .44cal 1860 army & .36 navy as well as the single shot .45 cal patriot and my favorite rifle, the .50 cal T/C caplock.

After 34years I finally own a centerfire handgun. It is the SS Ruger Vaquero with 7-1/2 inch barrel and chambered for the .45 Colt
I am sooo happy with it that I could bust!

Our govenor supported a SASS event as told in last weeks newspaper. Now I really dont know the diff between CAS and the SASS but the bottom line is that I dont call myself glanceblamm for nothing. Especially when working with that 1860 army.

Hate to (Lead-Up) that new .45 but figure on taking Verl's advice purchasing his catalog along with some push through slugs and try to do this right.
