Thread pitch/ tap and die size ?
« on: December 09, 2010, 11:45:48 AM »
Hello all !

I recently came into a Colt .38 Special Police Positive. Dirt cheap ;D. Problem is it needs a good and thorough cleaning and rebluing. :(

When I disassembled the ejector ratchet from the stem, I had to drive it out with a punch(it was very stiff) when I did this I boogered up the threads on the stem. ???

My question is, does anyone know the proper thread size of the stem, so that i could order a tap and die ?
It is just enough that it will not screw back together and I would rather not try and force it.
Thanks in advance for any replies ! :D

I do not know the thread pitch but I would try using a carefully ground and polished punch to restore the buggered portion of the threads. Chasing the threads bi;; remove some of the metal and at the least create a weaker joint.. A knife like blade can sometimes be used to push the damaged threads back into position at least on the external parts..

Thanks for the input, I have a friend looking for a tap and die ...........

If all else fails I will try it. I was also going to stop at the local Machine shops, maybe someone has some old dies there. :)

Is there some reason you cannot measure the diameter of the rod and put a thread gauge on the threads to tell you what they are?  Shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.  Larry
