Picking a handi rifle.

Ok so i have a 22 hornet and i love a handirifle. Well i was a dicks and was holding the camo 308 and man did it feel good. Im prollly going to get for christmas. But i also wanted a wooden stocked one. I was looking and dont know really what caliber i should get. I like a 243, i have one in stevens and i shot 4 doe and a 8 pointbuck(my first, last monday)  and i am very impressed with that round.I also looked at the 280,25-06 and 7mm-08. Between me and my dad we have a lot of guns so i was leaning towards the 280. So what would go with.

I have one of the Dick's 308s Its an awesome rifle Did the JB bore paste thing and was shooting 1 1/2" at 100 yards. I did replace the scope that came with before I even shot it. Last deer season I took a deer at 160 yards with it. That being said the 280 is on top of gunna get it next list! I have heard nothing but good things about the 280.

awsome yeah the scope didnt seem that good so i would prolly change it. What kind of bullet are you useing. how hard is it to do the jb bore paste thing?

All the calibers you listed overlap quite a bit in what you can do with them. More information from you will net some more accurate results...

What is the primary use, then what is secondary? Who will be shooting it? What kind of experience do they have? Will you reload for it? Is recoil a consideration? What about ammo costs?

Yeah i will look at the faqs. The primary use will prolly be deer hunting. I will be shooting it im 14 years old ,5'5 and 200lbs so i can take some recoil. I dont no what you mean by experience but my life revolves aroung hunting and fishing. i won reload because i havent learned how to yet. Ammo cost is really i dont care.

All of them would be a good choice, but the 280 would be a great all around choice.

Yeah thanks and im starting to get addicted to handi rifles. Im prolly gonna get the 280 and 308. I like the simple fact of you know theres one bullet to get the job done, and thats all you need it. Even when i shoot a bolt action i only put 2 in it.

Pick any of the calibers you mentioned and have fun. Shoot, shhot and keep shooting.

I agree with 99% of the stuff in the FAQs, it is an awesome collection of knowledge.
I am not trying to start a fight but I really disagree with JB paste down the bore. Gale Mcmillan of Mcmillan rifles says just shoot the rifle and enjoy it. I think he might know a bit about rifle bores.

Yeah my hornet , after reading the faq's and info, though i would have to mess with it to make it accurite. Well i went to the range and 10 shots later i had 1 1/2 groups at 50 yards. I thinks thats good considering i usually mess up a shot and cause a flyer. And the game im hunting is bigger than 1 1/2 inches hahaha.

JB bore paste thing is very easy as per the FAQs. I happened into kmart a few years back and found out they were selling off the Remington ammo cause they were switching to winchester I bought every box they had of rem core lokt 150gr 308, so I'm still shooting it up. Alot of guys on here swear by 165gr and 168gr bullets in their 308s. My wife says santa is probably gunna give me a reloader for Christmas. So I will start playin with loads and see if The groups will get any tighter.

My answer is buy them all!
Many on here will tell you that you'll eventually own them all anyway!! Lol!!
I have a .308 (It's my first, but not necessarilly last Handi). After altering the forearm lug hole just a smidge, and adding an O-ring to the forearm lug, it's a dandy shooter!
The FAQ's are definitely helpful!
I didn't do the bore paste thing, but fired a couple boxes of shells and cleaned it a couple times between, and I got pretty good results. As far as factory ammo, I was always a Rem Corlokt guy, but it seems as if the Winchester silver box ammo shoots a little better in my .308.
I also had to send it in due to misfires. The fix was free and made a ton of difference with the trigger and accuracy. Not to mention no more misfires! Hopefully the new guns already have the upgrade installed.

The 280 is a great one with a strong following. The 308 in survivor form is also an awesome barrel!
As most said any would fit the bill, but I agree with your choices of the 308 & 280. Once you start handloading the appreciation factor only goes up! ;)

  Apex just some advice from an old Fart. Get a book about reloading read it a couple of times. See if you'd be interested. You would never be out of ammunition if your components could be found.
  BBBIIIGGG but. You will never SAVE money by reloading. The cost per round will be less though.

+1 that!........to put it another way,'you will spend just as much, but shoot more for each dollar'. Plus, you can tailor make your ammo for your purposes, rather than just what the factory thinks you should have. I like to have a light bullet 'varmint load' and a heavier bullet 'deer load' for calibers like that. A few notes in your reloading notebook on settings for the scope with each and a few shots to check it and you are good to go.

Yeah my mom thinks you only need a few guns hahah, my dad syas you cant have enough. Well at least i have someone backing me up. ;D :D Yeah im only 14 so theres no way that i would convince my mom to reload. My popop is going to teach me how to reload shotgun shell, he has evrything. Eventually when im alilttle older i will definitly reload. Im starting to lean to get the 308 and thean a 243 but i dont know yet?
