Try hunting in hickory, oak, blackgum, sweetgum, pine, or cypress trees. If you find a food source you should find squirrels. Use your ears and listen, this will often bring you to squirrels more effectively than your eyes. Sometimes when in an area that should hold squirrels but doesn't stumps me, I'll break out a call and let off a few barks or some chatter and this will bring the squirrels out to play. Just practice and it will pay off.
Good hunting!

What part of the country do you live? Any nut tree will do. Walnuts, acorns, hickory's. The edges of woodlots boardered by corn fields can be hot. You will never find a better eaten critter. I think they are the best wild game you will find. A mess of squrriels in gravy and a pile of mashed potatoes are a meal fit for a king!!!! :agree:

Shouldn't have any problem finding a corn field. Once the corn has dried or the fields have been cut the squirrels start hording for winter. If you can get acces to a woodlot you'll probably find squirrels.

superdog,
Locate the stands of hardwood trees. Don't they have hazelnut trees along with hickory nuts trees growing wild in Iowa? Any kind of wild nut bearing tree or brush attracts squirrels. What 'duxman' told you is also great advice. By the way, also good with squirrels in gravy is roosted veggies like carrots, onions, and potatoes. Add some homemade cornbread biscuits, home churned butter and wild honey and heaven isn't far away. Lawdog

recently, i shot some squirrels with a shot gun, it was fun ,but most of the squirrels i,ve got over the years were with air guns, talk about sport! it,s not as aesy with a pellet gun, but it,s alot more satisfying. coopershooter.
