Dry Firing Freedom Arms Revolvers
« on: December 11, 2010, 05:25:04 AM »
Freedom Arms says don’t dry fire without snap caps and recommends only limited dry firing with snap caps.

Is there any way to set up a M83 or M97 to handle a substantial amount of dry firing without damaging the gun?

I was thinking maybe removing the firing pin or using some kind of shock absorber in the frame channel that houses the firing pin or both.  Maybe strip of leather to cushion the blow of the hammer?

Any ideas/suggestions.

Thanks,

Paul

What I would do, is take an empty cartridge case, fill the primer pocket with silicone sealant over which I would put the top of a spent primer.  The metal of the primer wouldn't be any harder than anything the gun was made for the the silicone sealant would absorb shock.

I don't see how that would be any/much different than the FA snap caps. I have FA snap caps in a number of different calibers, but to be honest, I've almost never used them. I guess I bought them "just to have them", for whatever sense that makes.
Paul, I guess we ought to call or e-mail Bob to ask what they mean by "limited", and seek a further explanation. Looks to me like they ought to be good for hundreds or even thousands of snaps, but not hundreds of thousands. But I ain't the Warranty guy.

Ken,

I too have FA snap  caps but have been reluctant to use them to any great extent.  I have to get in touch with FA on an other matter and will ask when I call.  I posted here in hopes that somebody might have some other ideas that I could run by FA.

By the way, did you ever run down an acceptable engraver for FA revolvers?

Paul

Years ago, I had Jere Davidson out in Virginia do some engraving on a model 83.  I don't know if he is still working, but he did a heck of a job on mine.  He also commented to me on how hard the metal is on a Freedom Arms, unlike anything else.

Two examples of Jere Davidson's engraving of 83's were shown in a Five Shot Journal article a number of years ago. I don't have contact information, and haven't spoken with him.
