new to me 444 worked to perfection. (pic added)
« on: November 23, 2010, 12:13:59 PM »
i  decided i was wanting a neat litte short rig for hunting here in the catskills and after not finding anyone willing to do a swap for a bear rug longtom and i worked out a deal on a 444 barrel he was willing to part with. spent first 2 day with my son trying to score his first and had no success and deer sightings at an all time low. yesterday i went to one of my little out of the way spots and set up at first light, starting seeing deer right away. at 7:45 i heard something behind me and peaked around the maple i was leaning against and there he was in close and comming with a mission on his mind (thank god i was not toating my long barreled mag as my blind is set up in tight quarters) well at 10 yards i sholdered and cocked the hammer all in one motion and he took a 90 up the hill, he made it all of 2 bounds before a 240 gr core lock hit him in the back of the rib cage he stagered 30 yards further and it was over. the shot was less than 15 yards and took out everything in its path all the way to the base of the neck on the oppisite side. was quite suprised it did not exit. but he was a dandy little 8 pt dressed 155 #. this was my first big game taken with a handi and i look forward to many more.

Good shooting!  At 15 yd it doesn't suprise me the 240gr didn't exit.  The 265 Hornady FP would have, but sounds like the 240 did a fine job as well.  I do like the 444, congrats.  DP

Congrats on the buck. ;D
I got a buck with a 240gr. bullet out of my 44mag.
Those .429 bullets really do the trick. ;)
