Depending on the location you plan to hunt, the gun will shoot long ranges if you practice, so magnification may be wanted if your shots may be longer, (3-9 on my 45-70) But if your shots are closer and you like a fixed, I just put a 4x shotgun scope on my 44 mag Handi and that is quite nice. No hammer extension needed as the hammer is just behind the scope. (Ultra rail has more adjustment for short scope) And it sits very low to the gun set up that way.
Hope this helps,  thejanitor

I have a new Redfield 4 12 40 on a 32" BC 45-70 rechambered to 45-120.  Have several hundred rounds with this scope and no problems, seems to handle the recoil just fine.  Also have two (2) Redfield 3 9 40s, one on a Huntsman 50 cal and the other on a 444M/410, no problems with these scopes either.  The 3 9 40 new redfields have good visibility in low light situations, haven't taken the 4 12 40 into the field.  Also, the eye boxes on these scopes are fairly thin so they cut foreheads quite nicely. :P

I have a 2x7x33 VXII SHOTGUN scope on mine and love the bold X-hairs and extended eye relief.

I think a VX I or II 1x4 would be nice too, I have a couple of the VXII's mounted on my 20 & 12 USH's again BOLD  X hairs are very nice and quick for the shorter ranges I use them under.

Same here. I have them on my .30-30 and .45-70 Handis.  Both have taken multiple deer, as well as bobcats and a coyote-- the coyote was a 158 yd shot with the .30-30.  I like 'em.

I think I have the same, it is a Simmons Masters series pro-diamond scope, 4X fixed power, 4" or more of eye relief, very sharp and clear optics, especially for the price. The last I checked, Midway had them for 59.95, you cant beat  that. The diamond reticle can also be useful in ranging and additional aim points.

I have a Swift Premier 1.5X4.5X32 on a 45 Colt that I just reamed to 454.  Love that scope.  It has the circle-X reticle, and is as clear as a bell.  I've had 3X9X40 Swifts on a 30-06, a 45-70 and a 500 S&W, no problems ever with any of them.  The 500 blew the crosshairs out of 2 other scopes in a very few shots, the Swift has been going strong for 3 years now.

I put a simmons deerfield on my BC for a 200yd match. it was zeroed to 100yds. I thought Id just rezero it before the match and everything would be fine. Wrong! Im shooting a lead 405 bullit at just under 1350 fps. I needed 21.5" of elevation to rezero and ran out of elevation. so now before the next match Ill have to shim it up. Im thinking 10 to 15 thousanths under the rear of the mount should fix it. DR
