They will do fine, but H&R tells you not to do it because you can load a short in some rifles so that the rim is under the ejector, when you try to close the action it will fire the round with the action only partly closed with gets very exceting.  Larry
A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

If your shots are within 25 yards or so I'd just stick with CB Longs. My sportster shoots them good enough at that distance for head shots on squirrels and such plus they are quieter than most shorts.

Remington now markets what they call 'CBees' in .22Long Rifle; a 33gr. truncated cone HP bullet @ 740fps. These should fill up a chamber pretty well. They also make their 'Sub-Sonic' in LR which work really well for me, but Im in the country.
I have the Sportster barrel with open sites for fun/plinkin', if I were going to snipe little varmints I'd have a scope for sure.
BTW, I have shot .22CB Shorts in it and didnt have any trouble, but a youngster might. If the rim slips past the extractor and it gets slammed shut it could go off without the breech locked.

"CB's" (i.e. - conical bullet) can be purchased in either CB shorts or CB longs. They are each loaded with the same amount of propellant, however the CB longs are in a .22 long rifle casing while the .22 CB shorts are loaded in .22 short cases (Duh). The .22 longs are much easier to handle with cold or fumbling fingers. I will still buy CB shorts if they have no CB Longs in stock, but I now much prefer the .22 CB Longs. They shoot the same...<><....:)

FWIW, in mine the .22Short HP HV (all I could find for sale here is HV) have quite a report, if noise is an issue for you.
