What is the problem with the J-hook model?  I have several 700s and one is a j-hook and I can not tell any difference in their handling or shooting.  Put the key away and forget it.

It's my understanding that 2005 was the last year of the dreaded J Bolt Remingtons. I bought one in a 308 BDL. The trigger was horrible and wouldn't adjust. I replaced it with a Rifle Basix and still had a horrible trigger. I replaced the J Lock assembly that has the snake type spring assembly in the bolt with a Callahan Speed Lok and it got fabulous quick. If you have one I'd suggest either replacing the J Lok assembly or making sure to take the key with you. Mine locked by itself on a hunting trip and I wanted to release it using an axe but great sense prevailed. You can lock one just by turning the the J shroud but you can't open it unless you have the key....or a cutting torch. The spring assembly inside the bolt can also effect the trigger setup and lock time on some is terrible- mine was in the terrible bunch.

When i went to buy my most recent 700, i was told that the j-lock was dscontinued in 2005.  I dont like them for the same reason i dont like smith and wesson.  I dont need government locks on my gun.
