When you mention Carter's name here in ALaska you bring up feeling of disgust and hatred. Carter did so much damage to Alaska, and the Alaskan people Hate him for what he did. Carter turned millions of acres in to Parks and preserves. Everywhere we turn to extract our mineral wealth we are met with restrictions put in place by Carter. We can not cross Federal Lands to access state lands to a mining claim. We asked "Since you are placing so much of our state off limits what do you expect us to do. Much of the land you have turned over to the state is surrounded by Federal Lands. You contol 74% of our state, and hold title to that land". Carter replied "Do not worry, your will still be able to drill in ANWR, cross Federal Lands or access your land, and we will start conveying large tracts of land to the state, for dispursal to the people". Well you see what they have done for ANWR, and the only land they have turned over has been small allotments to Native Corperations, none to the state. Inholders (people that were living on homesteads since before statehood now inside National Parks) have to fly into their homes. The park service has bulldozed their access roads cutting them off from the outside world.
Oil was the only thing left. Now Obama has put so many restrictions on oil we can no longer drill were the oil is. Not just ANWR, but along the coast as well. Our entire Northern Coast lies within the territory of the Polar Bear. Since Polar Bears are now on the Endangered list nothing can be done in their territory that might disturb them. No drilling or mining there. Now we are having words come down from DC telling the Park service and US Fish and Wildlife to start more aggressive action to protect the US Government owned areas. In short they don't even want anyone in those areas.
Now Carter and Obama are pretty much equal in the minds of Alaskans, we hate them both. Just mentioning their names makes our blood pressure rise.
