Black powder cap and ball hunting?
« on: November 09, 2010, 05:34:25 AM »
I would love to hear some success stories and see some pics of those of you that use cap and ball revolvers to hunt with. TIA

I haven't gone back through the C&B Revolver Forum to see if there have been threads on this, but it's an interesting subject.

I've been carrying my 3d model Dragoon deer hunting and shooting it quite a bit.   And, as I just posted over on the C&B forum, there may come a time when I will try to take one of our small deer with it!   ;D

I have a friend that killed a buck deer last season with his C&B pistol. Remington 44 with 35 grs FFFG .454 ball from 30 yards double lunged and exited. Deer went maybe 20 yards.

I need to get that much pistol before I give it a try.  Maybe I will see if I can get something going with my .44 c&b... but it isn't the type to handle much in the way of powder.

I guess rabbit hunting would be quite the fun challenge with a cap six iron.

A big caliber single shot pistol will work. I had almost forgot about this one. I was out shooting my CVA 50 cal mountain rifle getting ready for the deer season about 28 years ago. I also had a CVA mountain pistol in 50 cal. I loaded 60 grs of FFFG in it with a patched round ball. I could hit the center of an oil can at 50 yards every time with it. I was shooting at a place that was a sand pit that people had started dumping trash and they would drop off unwanted dogs also. I had a dog attack me there about a month earlier and just lucky that I had a 357 mag revolver loaded on my hip to quickly stop that attack. I had just shot my rifle and was loading it up again when I kept hearing something over the bank behind me. I picked up the pistol that was loaded and walked back to look over the bank that ran down to a pond that had formed from rain run off. When I came to the edge of the bank there was this mixed up breed of a German Shepard dog. The moment that he saw me he started growling and showing his teeth and started up the bank toward me. When he got about 50 yards from me I let him hold the ball from that mountain pistol in the chest. It stopped him in mid stride and dropped him in his tracks and I saw the ball splash in the water about 30 yards behind the dog. The ball went all the way through that dog and came out it's right hip after smashing the ball socket. The exit hole was the size of a quarter. That dog would have gone a good 50 lbs. I never did shoot a deer with that pistol because in NC where I lived at the time you could not use, and still can not use, a BP pistol to hunt deer. I have no doubt that that pistol would get the job done.

Big WILD dog on a dead run growling all the way. You bet I felt threatened. There was too much rabies around the area to worry about for me to take a chances. Like I said just a few weeks before this I was attacked by another dog at this very place and it almost got to me before catching lead from my 357 mag revolver on FULL AUTO.

I've hunted squirrels with good success with a Ruger Old Army, 21 grains of FFF and a cream of wheat filler and a wonder wad.  Super accurate.  I think I'd hesitate to hunt deer with even with all the black powder I could get into a .44 gun.  It just ain't enough unless you have a perfect close range shot.  I think the ballistics are about the same as a .38.
