Help with hammer early contender
« on: December 13, 2010, 01:41:10 PM »
I have an early model contender serial # 19xxx. My problem is the disc in the face of the hammer that is used to change from rim fire to center fire turns freely.  The disc can turned with a small screwdriver but there is nothing to hold it in position. What is supposed to hold the disc in place? It appears to me that I am missing some sort of pin that would have to be removed to spin the disc as there is a 1/16 dia. hole that goes side to side thru the hammer and the disc. I called T/C customer service and they want me to return the frame to them for repair and/or hammer upgrade/replacement. Seems silly to me to send back to T/C for what I believe to be a small user installed part. Am I missing something or is some other system used to hold the disc in place?  Is the part I need available anywhere and where can I get it?
By the way T/C tells me my serial # makes it a pre 1969 and they have no information about it. However this forum’s sticky link shows it to be made in the 1st half of 1972.
Thanks for any help

I had a similar problem with one of my frames.  What your missing is a detent ball, there's two, one on each side of the hammer.  What I would recommend is contacting James Henry, he's in CA.  He will either fix the hammer or replace it with a new one, that's what I opted for.  If you send it back to the factory they will do the 'easy open' conversion, that I did not want done.

Send me a PM and I'll give you his contact info. or do a search here.  I'm sure it's on one of the boards.

You won't get the easy open conversion unless you want to pay for it.  I used to be free, but now is at least $70.  You will get the latest hammer, and often new innards.  In some cases they undo trigger jobs with new parts.
