Good news for GB forum sponsors
« on: December 13, 2010, 08:21:53 AM »
The sponsors of the forums that buy space at the top of the page must be delighted now that the popups are gone. I never used to even look at those ads at the top of the page because the popups took my attention away from them.

Is there a reason you are here other than to gripe, bitch and complain?

How much does it cost you to visit this site? Are you getting your money's worth?

Graybeard:

This probably seems very naive and snotty, but I truly believed that the main purpose of this forum was to complain about things, specifically or at least mostly politics. I used the overall content of the forum as a guide for conduct. It was searches for particular types of content that led me here in the first place.

I'm very sorry if I offended you, and will be happy to leave the forum forever if you like. I have found it very useful for helping gather information related to gauging popular opinion on various important topics, mostly having to do with the economy. Sharing a conclusion, I sense more fear lately than pessimism. Pessimism dominated things for a couple of years, but now real frustration and consequent fear seems to be common.

As for the comments on the forum and ads, it was intended to be constructive criticism. Something definitely seemed to have gone wrong when I saw the sudden drop in response time and the increasingly intrusive ads. Consider the ascent of accuweather.com versus weather.com. Accuweather's success has a lot to do with management of how ads are presented, and how the site responds. Pardon me for being so bold, but I make a living working with social media, so I am more likely to comment on advertising and presentation.

I love it. You have to be the most plain spoken person I've encountered on any forum. I don't believe in beating around the bush either.

Accuweather? It's in my local paper and on my computer. It should be named Inaccuweather. It's never right.

That's what I like about this place.  If someone gets too big for their britches, GB gives them the boot.

I for one had no problems with the pop-ups.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Yup I'm blunt and plain spoken don't tend to beat around the bush. I've never been accused of being PC. I do try to be fair and even handed in dealing with folks but some folks just get under my skin when it seems all they wanna do is gripe and complain.

I have no problem with gripes and complaints when warranted but not all the time.

As to the purpose of this forum it's plainly stated under the title of it. Yes folks do seem to have strayed badly from that and I really don't particularly like the direction it seems to have taken. It is one of the top ten most visited and posted to forums of the 220 on the site I believe so I try to let as much go as I can but there comes a time when things have to be addressed.

I normally leave posts here for a bit if there isn't a real proper place for them and some times even when there is. But yeah I do tend to move threads that have a very specific forum especially when that forum is also a well used one. Even my own threads that I some times start here I move to the proper place once regular posting seems to have tapered off. I have one now that will soon be put where it more properly belonged to start with.

I'd much prefer folks take a look at the full list from time to time and place threads that we have a specific forum for especially a fairly active one where they belong so I don't have to. Of course I'd prefer to be super rich rather than so good looking so what does my preferences about to.  :o

Graybeard:

Thanks for clearing that up for me. It's hard to tell what intentions are sometimes. I'll keep my posts in line with your stated purpose, and limit my posts to being positive for the most part, and thought provoking in general.

It was singularly inconsiderate of me to mention sponsors and advertising methods. My motivation for doing so was to give the forum owner feedback on what I thought was a troubling trend. It wasn't intended to be interpreted as a pointless complaint or whining. It was intended to be constructive criticism. It's good to know you are paying attention and managing the forum in a hands-on manner.

I think people need a way of venting frustrations about things they cannot control, and with all the crazy things happening in our country right now, we're probably seeing a spike in venting those frustrations. That may explain the straying you mention.

Merry Christmas!

Conan,

Graybeard is too shy to say it, but I will. If you don't like so many adds then start flying the sponsor flag and make a nice contribution to the site. It costs Bill & his family a lot to keep this site going and if we appreciate it we should all contribute financially to help. JMO. Merry Christmas.
