Anybody ever tried making "cold-brewed" coffee?
« on: November 21, 2010, 07:46:39 PM »
On another website I visit, a guy was talking about how great cold-brewed coffee is. "Pffff..... Okay" I thought. Prolly just the latest trend of the Starbucks loungers.

Reading about it further though, I found that it's been popular in other countries for decades. Coffee often gives me heartburn, and supposedly the cold-brewed stuff has a lot less acid. What the hey, I made a batch, following instructions I found at a coffee geek website.

These folks saying that cold-brewed coffee is superior to hot are not exaggerating. Had I not tried it myself, I never would have believed it. No bitterness, no heartburn and way better flavor.

You can make both hot and iced coffee using the cold-brewing method as a starting point, and it's a simple process requiring no special equipment (couple of containers and a filter are all you need).

Anywhoo, I'll never go back to hot-brewing...

Can you still smell the coffee cooking in the morning?   ;D. If not then it's not for me.

I MIGHT give it a try.  Maybe.  I tend to be in the aforementioned "Starbucks loungers" crowd though ;) (well, coffee house anyways - Starbucks is kinda like the Wal-mart of coffee shops and should be avoided if at all possible).  Never been much for any of the cold coffees, but I'll give anything a shot.

Typically I tend to like a good mocha latté or a machiatto.  Never really liked regular old drip/perc coffee.  Truth be told, if I'm drinking coffee at home rather than out and about, I tend to prefer instant :).  My grandmother always made instant coffee, and while my parents wouldn't let me have the stuff, I could always sneak off to "Meh-meh"'s and she'd fix it for me :).  As such that's just kinda what I got used to growing up.

Thank you so much for the link!  I LOVE cold coffee mixed with milk and vanilla!  Matt prefers hot coffee.  Using this method I can take the cold coffee concentrate to make my frappuccinos, and he can mix his with hot water for hot coffee.  It is a wonderful solution to our coffee issues. Thanks again.

 Heather,

It works great for both, but in iced drinks is where it really shines. I've found out that there are a few coffee places around here that use cold-brewed for their iced coffee drinks because of the reduced bitterness.

I just got off work and mixed me up a glass of the coffee concentrate, whole milk and Bailey's Irish Cream over ice.

My Wife and I used to only drink one cup per day in the morning, just to help clear the cobwebs. Now I can't keep enough of the stuff in stock to keep up with demand!

just read the thread and it triggered a memory that was still lurking around in my head. Got up and checked---whooohaa. In a back corner I have a French coffee pot (glass type with the sediment screen that you push down) that can be used to make hot or cold coffee. had it for about 22 yrs. and used it for maybe 5-10 pots of hot coffee. At the time I thought it was too much trouble and bought a percolator. Put it  away and haven't used it since. Gonna try using for cold and keep using the percolator for hot. WhooHoo ;D  Thanks Victor3. God Bless to all.

Yeah, a French press seems to be how many folks do it. It eliminates the need for a separate filtering step, which to me is the biggest pain about cold-brewing. I've been looking for a sale on a large French press myself.

Tested the cold-brew stuff on a friend at work yesterday and now he's sold on it too. He asked what kind of fancy coffee I had to use to get that kind of flavor. It was just plain ol' Maxwell House.

Funny thing about the french press. I never did try it cold. so after I typed my response, I got up and made a pot, cold. 19 hrs. later I'm drinking some now. Not bad at all. if you watched the you tube thingy, the guy was using "high brow" grounds. Now this here old man is on Social Security---soooo, I used some of my lowest priced Kroger coffee. I definitely can tell the difference between it and Starbucks when it is made hot!!! Surprise, surprise---El cheapo tasted pretty good cold. drinking it right now and gonna have another glass. The loss of acidity is a plus as long as it doesn't touch the caffeine! Being a recovering AA I drink a LOT of coffee and I has to haz me caffeine to sleepzz! ;D :D ::) Victor3--a big thank you for bringing this subject up. OH--and the french press says thank you also. ;D God Bless to all.

ETA: Tommy---Good for you. glad for you.           GOF

I gotta try this!  Thanks for posting it.

I'm like Goofyoldfart, I drink a bunch of coffe and can sleep after drinking it.  My wife teases me about it. "Having a coffee after supper?  Now you'll be asleep before Stargate is over. ::)"

AND I can't do sodypop due to the carbonation. tears up the tummy. Love flat sody!! have to watch out for the sugar though. God Bless to all.
