POLL: Choke tube for slugs?
« on: December 08, 2010, 05:29:09 PM »
Please post any reasons for your choice even if it is "that's what I had" .

I got good accuracy from a rifled tube but it was good for only 2-3 shots without cleaning. I'm testing a modified tube now.

Thanks,
eddiegjr

I have a Win 1200 with w/c deer barrel, I used the I/C screw in factory choke with decent results both on paper and on deer. I decided to switch or try a RCT just from reading the rave reviews from others so I bought a Carlsons RCT. My slug of choice has always been a Winchester Super X 1oz 2 3/4" foster type slug. This slug at 50yds was adequate, with the RCT I was able to stretch a shot if I absolutely had to out to 100yds however most of my shots are normally under 100yds. The RCT is IMO an excellent accessory or addition when going after deer sized game with a foster style slug.
My last range time with this set uo I tried something different and that was I swabbed the bore with TC Bore Butter between shots, I found that this not only made cleaning easier but helped with smaller groups.
It is also my opinion that sabot slugs would benefit more with a fully rifled barrel.

Huntsman1,

When you didn't swipe the rifled choke tube or clean it, did the accuracy deteriorate very much. With the one that I have, if I don't clean it after three shots accuracy goes to nothing with sabot slugs. It is a 20 ga "SNIPER" winchoke  1 in 26" twist.

Hi Ear, Maybe try the TC Bore Butter?  So you are using "sabot" slugs? Save some money and try plain old Win, Rem or Federal slugs. I find these soft lead slugs work really well with the RCT, I just like the Winchester Super X ones better.
As to your question, If I did'nt swab the barrel the groups just were'nt as tight than the 2.0" groups @ 50yds I was getting. Maybe 3-4" at 50yds which would open up at 100yds to more than double. With iron sights I don't want to chance a 'gut' shot or worse...so with the RCT I felt more confident at 100yds if I had to...
