What to do with 150' black walnut
« on: December 13, 2010, 06:08:45 AM »
An old friend left me about 150 bf of rough sawn black walnut (most or all).  It's 10-13" wide and 1 1/4" thick.  I'm not a wood worker and don't have the tools, but how would I go about selling it locally?

The only thing I might try is having someone laminate a couple feet together and carve out 2 handi stocks for my two boys.  Would a Dremel work for that project?  I'm also open to doing some simple projects...

If you want to sell the walnut, i'd run add's in the local paper that it's forsale...  Unless it's something very spl., it's worth about $2.00 per bd. ft., and i'd sell it ALL to one person.  Don't let buyers start picking through it, as you will end up with all the unsaleable culls!

If you want to glue up a few boards for a stock, then cut off 3 boards, about 6" longer than you will need, and take them to a cabinet shop to be planed.  Personally, if you haven't done it before, i'd just have the cabinet shop, plane/sand and glue the 3 boards up into a blank for you, using waterproof glue.

If you haven't ever made a stock before, it's a LOT of work, and if you want it to come out right, it's a LOT of work just to inlet the blank to accept the action.  I'm not saying you can't do it, but i AM saying it's a LOT more work than you think it is!

I've glued up stock blanks, then sent them in to have them semi-inletted for the gun i wanted to put it on.  Maybe that would suit you, but it won't be cheap either.

Semi-inletted = sending the blank off to a place that will take the blank and machine it inside and out to what ever firearm it's going on, and you finish it from there.  It will still need final fit to the action, and final shapeing/sanding to the outside plus the finish put on it.

These days?  I have no idea, you will have to do your own research on that one.

I sell hardwood lumber for a living. About $1.5 mil./year.

12"+ '5/4' (five quarter) lumber is something special. Certainly not 'rare', but special. I would wholesale material like this in the $5-6/BF range. It retails for quite a bit more. All this assumes, of course, that it is kiln dried. End paint on the boards is a good indication that it was kiln dried, but not a guarantee. Most pro's won't consider using something like this unless they know its provenance for sure. 5/4 lumber can also be an indicator that it was not professionally sawn.

You can advertise in local papers or talk to local cabinet shops. This material would be particularly useful to custom clock makers if you can find one locally. If there are Amish nearby you may also want to talk to them.

Thank you Trigertime.

These boards have been in my barn for 5 or more years.  I would call them "rough cut", basically slabs cut from trees and stacked in a dry spot in my barn.
