New Maverick Bolt Action (pictures)

I recently picked up one of these in .308 to go with the ATR .30-06. Seems they are pretty much a re-named ATR 100 without the Lightning trigger. 

The mechanic's appear to be same, but there are some cosmetic differences as the pictures will show.

It shoots rather well.  Unlike it's cousin the ATR, it has been more finicky with the ammo.  The ATR likes a variety of brands and bullet weights.  I've only put Federal Power Shoks and Remington Core Locts 150's through the Maverick.  It definitly favors the Remingtons.  While I've only had about 20 rounds through it, its showing 1 1/2" at 100 yards with the Core Locts.

I was surprised at how clean the rifle was upon delivery.  I dis-assembled it thinking that I might find some grit and packing lube, etc.  Not so.  There was an appropriate amount of oil and no grit.  A quick wipe down with some Hoppe's and it was re-assembled.

Since the photos, I've mounted a 3X9X40 Nikon Pro Staff and Leupold Rifleman rings.  Bases were provided with the rifle.

Thanks for the report. I've compared one in .270 side by side with the Savage Edge and it seems to be built sturdier, better balanced. My only hang-up is the blind magazine,but I'm still seriously looking at them.

Is the Maverick and ATR pretty much the same rifle?  Is the Maverick produced in a different factory using cheaper labor?

Other than the cosmetic differences, it does seem to be pretty much the same rifle.  The stock is slimmer that the ATR's.

The address printed on the Maverick is Eagle Pass, Texas.  I suspect it is manufactured just as the Maverick 88 shotgun has been reported to be:  Parts made in Mexico.  Assembly in Texas.

I'm considering ordering one in .243.

It's funny I haven't heard about these yet. And funnier to me is the question Why? If it's the same basicly, just with out the LBA trigger Sounds like they are trying to do what Savage did by putting out the older models and labeling them Stevens. I look for the ATR to go up further in price by releasing these Mavericks. Thanks for posting up pics EVOC.

I've put another box of Core Locts through the Maverick.  I'm getting a first shot flyer (this has occurred since I first fired the rifle), then two shot's consistently within an 1" of each other.  The flyer expands the three shot group size to a very solid 1 1/2".  The first shot always goes high, the next two are low right.  I have it zeroed so that the first shot is hitting straight through the bull.  I again tried the Federal Power Shok 150's and they now shoot as consistent as the Core Locts.  Oddly, the Federals group just as the Remington's;  A high shot, then two low right.

How's the bedding?  Can you slip a dollar bill between the barre and forearm?  If not I'd say it was a heat issue due to the bedding.  If it's that minor of a shift, shouldn't really be a concern for hunting.  Hopefully, you don't need a second, unless you are standing 10 yards away finishing anyway, right?

EVOC ONE - I just picked up a Maverick for my son in 243 and I'm getting the same flyer business. BUT I think I can fix both yours and mine! Look at the front scope mount - it's over the lug and barrel nut. Flip the base around and you have a solid mount. Stupid factory issue. I'll report on group improvements and you the same, please. BTW - my flyers are more like 3 inches currently. I have removed the mag, used a bread tag as a stock shim but on the last experiment I swapped the scopes and had an ah ha! moment. I will hopefully get to the range today. JR

Yup, that tightened up my groups considerably. The brass is still coming out crooked due to one lug not contacting and I may still send it in for warranty work but turning the scope base around cleaned up the random fliers!
