Gun season so far??
« on: November 26, 2010, 03:32:07 PM »
Hey all 'bama hunters.  I am going this weekend for my first deer hunt of the season.  I will pretty much be hunting my old houses and stands blindly.  I just got married this September so my pre-season scouting got sidelined lol! I just hope to bloody my new .35 Whelen! Has anyone else had any luck so far this year in 'bama?

I have heard folks say the lack of rain has killed off some greenfields and that its been too hot for the deer to move.
I haven't seen anything at my new spots in Shelby Co and in Talladega Co, but I here some gunfire.
Should be better tomorrow morning with the colder weather.

I went on opening day and saw one deer slipping out of the field into the tree-line just at day break. It was foggy and couldn't make out much. Later on I caught a glimpse of a coyote in the far back corner of the field for a split second as it also went into the tree-line. I haven't had a chance to get back out there since then.

This 100 lb. doe walked out right at quitting time. I was in my climber 101 yards off a state hwy in Shelby Co.
I was unloading my gun when I saw a flash of white out on the greenfield.
80 yard shot with open sights through a tiny triangular opening in some twigs. bang-flop.
Was not thinking of reloading, when I saw another doe walk off the field.
Coulda got the limit.

Edmondsons in Alabaster is turning this one into chops, flank steak, and hamburger by now.

I went the Sunday after opening day and saw nothing, and it got hot really fast. Yesterday I went again with my middle son and he managed to kill two, shortly after we got into our stands. Again, I saw nothing. I was really looking forward to popping a doe with my Encore pistol and my cast bullet handloads.

Maybe later on in the season...

Temps in the 60's Saturday; I think I will wait until Sunday to go out again.
I am hunting for some deer chops, hot sausage and "bacon ends" burgers.

I've only been a couple of times to the CWMA near here and the only deer I've seen so far was a fawn of the year on a deer carrier on the back of a guy's Toyota 4 Runner. I might try to make it again tomorrow.

Tomorrow morning might be a good day to hunt.

Since this Arctic jet stream cold front has been here this week, I have been seeing deer all over the place. They are browsing heavily due to the cold. On the way to church Wednesday night one was standing in the middle of the road with 3 or 4 others on the side. I slowed down and they walked out of the way. Then last night there was one laying off to the side. I think it might have been hit by a vehicle.

I might head out to the woods in the morning myself. I was planning on hunting in the afternoon, but rain is predicted to move in.

Monday pm / Tues am will see lows in the teens and a waxing cresent moon.
Seems like a great time for some Bama deer to go looking for something to eat in the daylight.

I plan to get some work done this weekend so I can sneak out early Monday afternoon.
Tuesday I can go in the morning because I don't have to be at a dove shoot until 10 am.

I've been keeping count of how many deer I've seen while driving to and from work and hunting trips since the gun season started. So far it's 13. About half were seen in the daytime.

Went out Sunday morning, but had to leave at 8 am to get ready to teach 4 year old Sunday School.
Sat in the hardwoods til about 7:15, and decided to sneak up on some unoccupied greenfields.
Snuck to within 20 yards if this one. The recoil made me loose sight of where he went but it was not straight down.
There appeared to be some skedaddle marks headed east so I headed east. No blood, figured I must have missed.
That afternoon, took a shot at a bobcat in the exact same spot. He was headed west.
When I pulled the trigger, it felt like I shot under him, but I found a blood trail headed west.
So 3 of us, armed only with flashlights, head off in the thick stuff in the dark after what we thought was a wounded bobcat.
(It seemed a lot more rational at the time)
Found this at the end of the trail.
Was sort of relieved not to find a wounded bobcat; it never occurred to me why all the blood was dry.

Wow, I am glad its not just me who is having a tough year.  The wind has been gusting and swirling on every trip this year and it has mostly kept the deer sticking tight to cover.  I did manage to see 5 nannies at dark on Saturday but I could not get a shot.  I have yet to see an antlered deer and darned few does.  All I shot this weekend was an unlucky coyote.

Got this one today about 9 am in Shelby Co.
174 lb.
Now I need a nice 8 or better to fill out the tag.
No 8's where I hunt; gonna need a invitation to hunt in Lower Alabama.

Any updates?

Two weekends left.
I am ready for a 10 pt to step out, or even a doe.
F&S recommended hunting through the noon hour when the moon is full.
I am going to try it and see what happens.

Three slick heads have come home with me. Last week should be good as the rut is on and this moon will be pretty much gone. I'm trying to remember what one with antlers looks like. All I've seen is does. Nice buck PowPow.

I got this one about two weeks ago.  i saw one other shooter buck about 300 yards away last weekend but my dad was hunting in the general direction past the buck so I couldn't fire.  It was also the second deer I have seen in the last two weekends.  This hunting season has been terrible for me.  I have seen so little while on the stand.

going squirrel hunting tomorrow, so I will probably see several 16-pt bucks.
