The 410 double

One of the nicest woods loafing, hunter-gather guns I have is a double shotgun in 410caliber. It will print breneeki 3" slugs to the same point of impact at 30 yards. And take care of squirlls and other small game as well as my favorite bird grouse.

Mine is a Lefever and it is a delight to carry and shoot.

I was handling a .410 double in the shop last weekend sure felt nice shouldered well to I'mma thinking it was a CZ, For the cost of it thou I think I'll stick with my NEF singles.

Yes Bob, CZ makes some nice doubles. Theirs in 410 is really dainty. Felt really light to me.

I have a stevens 311 in 410 that I've owned for years. But when I found this Lefever I fell in love. Really nice american walnut stocks and the metalwork is like our USA craftsmen did 50 years ago. The price was steep but I've never seen another like it.

I've got the strangest .410 double youve ever seen, it's a Ducktown, campers special. 18 1/8th inch barrels mounted on something that looks like a SXS derringer, with a folding stock, I have alot of fun with it.......steg

I walked away from a winchester Mod 12 in 410 some years back and have regretted it ever since. The little that I go to gun and pawn shops, I don't recall seeing but one 410 double on the shelf. A couple in some friends racks. Too bad the shells are so expensive. eddiegjr

i had a really nice 410 o/u a few years ago. i forget the brand name now, but it would fold up with the barrel touching the butt for easy storage.it was the ultimate rabbit gun but i just got really turned off by the cost of shells and traded it off for a mini 30.

What you saw was most likely a Model 42.  Not a M12 (in .410).

Apparently Browning/Winchester thought a .410 pump-repeater needed it own designation.

Personally, I like my single in .410.  All the doubles I have shot, I never quite get past the crossing pattern and never did as well with them.  Course I grew up shooting the single shot.  There was a couple years I used a SxS 12 ga., but I finally gave up on it after about the 3rd time I let both barrels go on a rabbit by accident.  lol

I'm not a SXS fan but I've come to realize a 20 gauge SXS is a helluva gun for the beginner to proceed past the single-shot. as well as the expert upland bird slayer.  Personally I like a stack-barrel O/U and looking over its single-top vs. between two barrels.

Still, about 99% plus owners of SXS .410's swear by their dimenutive (sp?) SXS's.  And would RARELY sell their used .410's.

Personally I'd opt for a 28 ga stack-barrel, if not a 20-gagger!

But you  .410 afficianados, do you prefer a 3-inch shell over a 2 1/2incher?  Or visa-versa?

I've lusted after a .410 sxs for many years.
I finally found a bargain last year and bought it.
They are comfortable to carry all day.
Like others have stated it will take care of most anything I run into on a woods walk.

one of my favorites is a 28 gauge.  there was one time i wished it was a 12 gauge, but that was because there was a 400+ pound black bear 3 feet away.  i would like to get a 410 too.

I love the sxs dbls. The 410 is a lot of fun, never liked the 2 1/2 inchers I always use the 3 in shells. 99% of my hunting is with the 410 or 20 ga, both sxs dbls. POWDERMAN.

I use a Rossi Youth 410/22LR to shoot 410 in but do have an older model H&R 410 shotgun as well.
The Rossi 410 feels like it weighs about 3 lbs and with the 3" 5--000 buckshot loads will put them all on a paperplate at 30 yards. Throws a good pattern with 4's and 6's High Brass and with the 00 buckshot loads as well. It has a modified choke, so a full choke gun may pattern tighter and be good out to 35 yards with the .36 triple ought buckshot loads. I haven't tried them in the old H&R yet, but I will.
 I bought a a giant stack of 410 buckshot/slug loads and and about 10 boxes of high brass Winchester and Remington shells for $1.25 and $4 a box respectively, so I'm stocked up on 410.
That being said, I'd like to get a 410 or 20 ga double with the screw in chokes and might try an over /under.
I have an old Remington 12 gauge double with hammers that I killed my first deer with. Its an 1889 model but has the steel barrels and my Dad used to duck hunt with it until they made fun of him so much he finally got a Rem 1100.
It'll kick bejeesus out of you but throws the best buckshot patterns that I've seen with an old gun. It'll put them all on a paper plate at 40 yards using #1 buckshot 2 3/4" or 00 buckshot. I got the hole kill zone on that deer that I shot with it. It hit it in the head, neck, chest, broke its back, instant summersault to the ground hit from 20 yards

i had a 20ga. 311 years ago traded it away wish i still had that gun but now use a 1100lw 20ga and love it but wish it had a shorter brl but still my goto small game bird gun other than my 39a for treerats thought about the 410 my buddy has a sxs 410 and i have barowed it a few times very nice to carry but the shells are pricey but arent they all nowadays

About 45 years ago I used to shoot dove with an older fellow who had one shotgun.  It was a 28 ga. Remington auto, I believe Model 11(before the 1100).  In late summer he went to the LGS and bought a case of shells, #6 shot,  and hunted dove, pheasant, turkey, ducks, quail with it all fall and winter.  Said he hadn't missed a hunting day in over 35 years.  He averaged about 23 dove per box of shells.  Everyone told him the 28 was not big enough for any of those birds.  His standard reply was "One pellet thru the eyeball will take any of them".

I bought a rossi 410 double awhile backfrom a girl who needed  to pay a bill.Was going to trade it til I got
to shooting it. It just shoots too sweet

I just got a .410 Mossy pump for my daughter for self defense.  She just moved into an apartment and wanted something to keep the bad guys out.  The .410 has a PG and is very short.  Should be ideal for her.  She is an excellent shot but needs to get familiar with her new SG.  I got some neat self defense Winchester ammo.  It has 12 BBs and 3 cylinder shaped shot per load.  She is very excited so we'll be heading to the range shortly.  If this works as well as I think it will I might get one for myself to carry in the truck.  I've never shot a .410. I've only owned 12 ga SGs.  I expect lower recoil but won't know for sure until I pull the trigger.  Hopefully, the shotty will work out well for my daughter.
