Chance at Once-in-a-Lifetime Pure Michigan Hunt Makes the Perfect Holiday Gift for Hunters

By MDNR

Dec. 16, 2010

Those looking for a last-minute gift or stocking stuffer for the hunter on their holiday shopping list are in luck. Applications for the 2011 Pure Michigan Hunt - a drawing for the chance at the hunt of a lifetime - are on sale through Dec. 31.

The Pure Michigan Hunt is a unique multi-species hunting opportunity that allows three applicants to participate in every restricted-access hunt available - elk, bear, spring and fall wild turkey, and antlerless deer. Those chosen in the drawing also will get the first pick in a managed waterfowl area reserved hunt, as well as prizes such as crossbows and other donated items.

"It's only $4, you can buy as many chances as you like, and it only takes a few minutes to apply online or while you're out finishing up your holiday shopping," said DNRE Wildlife Division Chief Russ Mason. "Whether it's for a gift or for yourself, hunters won't want to miss this chance to step up their game and experience the thrill of Michigan's most sought-after hunts."

Pure Michigan Hunt applications may be purchased at any license agent or online at www.michigan.gov/puremichiganhunt. Those who purchase applications as gifts for other hunters must use the gift recipient's identification - a Michigan driver's license number or DNR Sportcard number - to ensure that recipient is awarded the hunting rights.

"Each application you buy also helps conserve hunting grounds and animal populations, because the money goes straight into the Game and Fish Protection Fund," Mason added.

Those selected in the drawing can hunt in any and all open seasons for each species until their tag is filled. They will not lose any preference points or weighted advantages for future limited-access hunts. Hunters who are ineligible to apply for elk licenses because of past success may participate in the Pure Michigan Hunt, and hunt elk again.

Anyone who is 12 years old or older may participate, as long as their hunting privileges have not been suspended by the courts.

If they include wolves I'll buy a few!
