I don't know about a "servival" situation but in a survival situation, I think most of Cold Steels products will get it done. I think I would go with a fixed
blade knife in San Mai steel with a blade shorter than the Trail Master which is too big IMHO.
Remember the TV show is sponsored by Cold Steel in part and has a boundless supply of knives to replace those that break or chipped.
Everything is not as it appears on the show.  ALL knives are made to cut, not chop, hammer etc.  I remember a couple of years back a guy complained
that his buddies Cold Steel Trail Master in San Mai chipped while chopping apart an elk.  About 50 guys told him how stupid his friend was.  I always carry a tomahawk for chopping and a small saw for sawing.

As far as the survival thing again, a knife alone won't get it done.  To survive one has to prepare to survive and be well equipped to do so.

Depending on what you are trying to survive it looks fine. What if the difference between life and death were a pair of pliers like those found on a multi tool? I would argue that a hatchet is better suited to chopping chores and a smaller knife may be better suited to most cutting chores. But, a hatchet really hurts my leg when I carry it in my pocket.

It's all compromise and you will come to get around the short comings of about any tool given time. If all you have is a hammer all problems start looking like nails.

I was in a similar boat here last november and I got looking into the Zero Tolerance knives. I ended up getting the ZT0301, if you watch the torture tests they do to them on youtube they kinda put anything that cold steel makes to shame but they are also twice the money (you can find them for 189 on ebay if you look around) I've never cared for cold steel knives honestly when I was serving everyone and their brother had a cold steel, I went with a benchmade emerson and none of them stood up to aka normal military feild use. If I had to have a folder it would only be the ZT0301 or any of the 0300 series it's the closest thing you can have to a fixed blade in a folder.
