Pachmyr forend question
« on: December 19, 2010, 07:59:54 AM »
bought a forend at a gun show yesterday  for my contender....on the inside it says it fits 10"bull and 14 in super barrels but there is only one hole in the middle which doesnt line up with either a lug on 10 in or 14 though there are 2 "spots" on either side of the hole where you can see you can drill these out or maybe the  form at the factory they had these plugged up...anyone else ran into this problem?...

i found this on ebay and you can see the hole and the 2 "spots" if you look at item  num 230562626070. look at the 4th pic

thanks for any replies....Mack

Sounds like you have one of the original Pachmayr forends.  They used a hanger bar attached to both mounts on a 14 inch barrel and to the one hole on a 10 inch barrel..  The hanger bars are often available on flea bay and at gun shows.  It is a good system, and I wish they had continued it with the new forends.

The hanger bar attaches to the one hole in the 10 inch barrel or both holes in the 14 inch barrel.  The hole in the forearm lines up with the hole in the hanger bar.

Glad to see this topic as I've been thinking about picking up one of these myself.  Does the same hanger bar work for both the 14" and the 10" barrels, or do they take 2 different bars?

(Sorry for the highjack, just thought it was relevant!)

Thanks,
Justin

The 14 inch bar will work on the 10 inch barrel, just have to make sure you mount bar so hole in forend lines up with hole in bar, the hole is not in center of bar, they also make a shorter bar for the 10 inch barrel and it will work on the 14 inch barrel with only one screw holding bar to barrel. same forend will work on both barrels.

It is supposed to be a tight fit.

Do you have a measurement on the width of the bar? Also is the forearm still soft and pliable or hard as a rock?

The slot is easily widened in the forend.  Put your unmounted hanger bar in vertically and work it back and forth a little whaile moving it down the slot (pry the slot apart slightly).  Same thing if you buy one that is to loose, squeeze the forend slightly in a padded vice and the slot will narrow up.  I would not sand down the bar.  Also you may need to slightly bend the ears on the forend that cover the hinge pin slightly outward, this prevents the unsightly wear marks on ythe sides of your frame.  The Pachmayr forend are real nice and repeatable in taking them off and on where you do not have to worry about screw tension in the forend changing your POI .

ok...tried to work the bar in there...slowly but it was tough.....it actually tore the rubber off the sides of the insides where the bar goes....very thin layer of rubber..........so since it was coming off i took a knife to it and the bar goes in there good now..tight but good.....2 screws that mount on my 14 in 30-30 barrel are really tight.....takes some pressure to get them to pull inside the holes......any way i like the look but i am worried about the tension difference on my 14 in 30-30 barrel(as compared to the walnut forend) as it is scoped......probaly will use the Pachmayr forend on my 410 barrel.......  also the 45/410 and  my 10 in 30-30 barrel do not fit in leather tc holster now.......anyone have any thought on the poi impact difference on wood forend vs Pachmayr?  as my wood forend  puts very little pressure on barrel.......i probaly will use wood forend on 14 in barrel as i dont want to screw up my poi though i have a mismatched grip since my grip is  Pachmayr.............anyway gives my son something else to mess around with when i go to that big hunting place in the sky....mack
