It arrived! Stock is nicely figured walnut-very attractive. The finish is quite nice on the metal and the wood to metal finish is excellent. The hammers looked very much like the OLD cocking levers. At first I thought they they had shipped the wrong model. Closer inspection proved that I was in err, the hammers DO hit the pins on the outside and force them to move the pin in side. Quite cleverly done. Checkering was EXCELLENT. No runoff/overs - crisp and I think I couold match this up gainst many Spanish and Italian guns. Remember the early EAA BAIKALS? Looked like a kid finished them with a file in the garage? Not any more, The finish was really very nicely done this time. I think I got my money's worth...now to get a weekend where I can try it out!!!

Glad to hear your report on the Baikal.
I have one of the Fake hammer guns. It has fantistic fit and finish. Falls open and shoots good. Just wished I had waited and got one with real hammers.
Oh well live and learn.

Almost forgot does your shotgun have the removable chokes???

Well, the week-end has come and gone, did you get a chance to use it?

How did it do? Any complaints? More laudatory comments? Is this gonna be a keeper? You gonna have to do any work to it? I guess what I'm asking is: Would you give us a "Product Report"?

Hi Folks:

Yup! gonna keep this one. It has the three chokes. I tried Full and IC. I shot paper shotshells loaded very light and absolutely murdered a coke can at 25 paces. Not one malfunction to fire. Because I had loaded them (16.9 gr CLAYS, 1 oz #9) there was no big shakes (literaly) in the recoil area. I think I will have to get used to the low rideing hammers. All in all, NEAT-O! to coin a phrase of yesteryear. I was a dandy. Oh, gotta be honest paper shotshell (Cheddite High Brass) did NOT drop out, had to pick em out. Oh well, next time I will try some AA's and see how they do.
Other than that, I was impressed and had a ball killing a coke can - bounce bounce bounce. :-)

How hard is it to open? Have heard horror stories about having to break them over your knee to get them opened.

Well, it was VERY easy to open if you mean once you move the lever. I have the internal hammer mode and I have the Cocking Handle Model. From my experience, only the internal hammer models are difficult to keep open. I use a ton of grease at the knuckle where most of the wear occurs on a break action and I add a drop of CLP to the internal bolt that lock up the action (the one the lever activates when you move it). That helps. The levers on the BAIKAL are HARD to move and stay that way it appears. So, no gentle little thumbs need apply for the Job of pushing the lever to open the gun. But once the bolt is released, it flops open and stays open. Same thing with the cocking handle Baikals. No pressure from the internal springs to keep the barrel from opening all the way. Just need thumbs like MIghty Joe Young to push the lever. :-) :-)

I have an older model and was wondering how I can tell if the hammers are real or not. Mine look like they strike the firing pin but how can I tell for sure without breaking down the gun?

Shooting Carts, Open the barrels and try to depress the firing pins (make sure the safety is off) if the pins depress and they extend out of the recoil shield they be's the real McCoy. Chances are you have the older one like I have, and they are just faux hammers, that cock the internal hammers.

Two Dogs, On the new one can both hammers be cocked at the same time like the older one with the faux hammers? Does it have the auto safety? RR

I had no problem cocking both hammers at the same time. If you look at the breech face on the true hammer model, you will see the the fireing pins have been placed in a removable plug, with a screw or two holding this plug in place. The BHII with cocking handles has the same breech face as the regular model , no plugs, or screws just a solid piece. Also, while the true hammer and the faux hammer look very similar, when you cock, set the auto safety off (both still have that feature), and ride the hammer forward with your thumb when you pull the trigger, you will see the hammer touch the fireing pin in the outside and actually push the pin forward (watch the breech face). It is neat. I took it out yesterday and gave it a thorough work out (shoulder may never be the same again). Flawless function, plastic AA's slip out and it was one of those rare days, I hit 9/10 clays with it.

My only down comment was that I did not buy two. Maybe next time they come up at CDNN. :-)
