Got my 1st coyote of the season yesterday. My friend John and I went out at first light to a place that was productive last year. We got set up on a large field that is seperatred by a ditch in the middle and is surrounded by woods on three sides. We set up at the end of the ditch at the edge of the woods and each of us watched a field, mine to my right his to his left. He started the Foxpro with rodent in distress for about ten minutes, but nothing showed. Then he switched to a cottontail in distress and right away I saw a coyote running thru the field on my right and another one coming in behind it. I let the first one go by so that John might see it but it spooked about 40 yards from the caller and turned and ran back the way it came passing the second one on the way. the second one stood there facing me but looking at the call so I put a 62 gr hollow point .223 right in the front of it's chest between the front legs at about 75 yards. It did a few circles and started running right at me and I was ready to shoot again he he nose dived into the ground. When I looke at the one running away I saw another one that had held back but I couldn't get a shot because of the brush. Next time we will pay a little more attention to how we set up. If we would have been closer together and closer to the edge of the field we might have got another one or two.
I was going to skin this guy but he stunk sooo bad I couldn't do it. The bullet went all the way thru and literaly blew the crap out of him. I used a new Savage Edge in .223 with a Redfield 4x12x40 scope and was shooting Golden Bear 62 gr HP.
