winter trapping
« on: December 14, 2003, 02:40:41 PM »
hey everyone,

i'm new here, so first i'll say hi.  I was wondering if anyone has success during winter trapping mink.  I know this time of year can be a challenge, at least i'm having a challenge catching them.  Does anyone have some tips that might help hang me one of them during this time of year.  I should add that i have lots of rivers and creeks (frozen of course) available to trap.  thanks

Howdeeeeee and welcome :D

I'm pretty sure you'll get some good info on mink (I've seen one :-D ).  Old RdFx, T-man and Boggy will jump in I bet.

Good to have you on board!

Welcome MnTrapper, are you home from school now?I replied earlier but something must have gone hay wire.
For your winter mink as in all trapping experiment.Try some trail sets with 120s or 160s,also bottom edge sets, also baited cubbies or pockets if you are able to dig them.
I experimented with colonies for mink and took 2 in 1 night 10 feet from each other.I want to try experimenting with colonies at bottom edges next.

thanks for the tips

i wasn't sure if i needed to be close to any open water.  I found a froze over breate hole for some animal, and chopped that open and put the traps close to that.

by the way i don't go to school, you must have me confused with another mntrapper.  i'll let ya know how i do.

one more question for bogman, do you trap the rats this late in the year, i have a few beaver sets out, but no takers yet.

Just pulled rat traps today,I would guess I will set more traps for them before the season is out.
If you have open water available to you,by all means set for mink there too.   Tom

I've trapped a lot of mink on dry land along frozen over streams too.  I used to prepare small cubbies, find natural cubbies and locate hollow logs, etc. before season so I would know where to go after everything was frozen over solid. I've also caught many mink in weasel boxes set along streams, with the box hole enlarged to 2 1/2". Ace

Mink in winter

Bog and Ace have good ideas that have stood the test of time and all you have to do is apply them to your situation..... I have caught mink in all the methods described, trailsets, boxes for mink with conibears and footholds, and bottom edge sets.. The boxes work good with bait in winter as it is harder for mink to find food and they come to bait readily.....Ace if i remember right your mother was a very good mink trapper and took her share of mink.

RdFx writes........Ace if i remember right your mother was a very good mink trapper and took her share of mink.

And her share of coyote, fox and bobcat too!  She even wrote an article once for the old Trappers World magazine about her coyote trapline. Also, as a hunter, no one could bag as many ruffed grouse as she could with her old 16 gauge single barrel.  I still have that shotgun and use it myself for grouse.  Ace
