Howdy, JohnnyRoss!
Your decision for a .22 LR or .22 Winchester Rimfire Magnum comes down to WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WITH IT??
The .22 LR has the versatility of firing all .22 shorts, longs, and longrifle cartridges. Ammo is cheap and universally available. Good for maybe 80-100 yards range use on small game, small varmits. Excellent choice for first rifle for general use orto learn basics.
The .22 WRM has almost twice the power of the .22 LR, and more range. Still useful for small game, small and medium varmits (up to fox, coyote, badger, porcupine, marmot-size, etc.). Ammo is much more expensive, probably 5 to 8 times as much as .22 LR. Flatter shooting and harder hitting than .22 LR. Ammo less widely available, but still easy to find. Good choice if you need more power and range, but don't do any ammo handloading.
