.444 scores!!!
« on: December 21, 2010, 06:00:07 AM »
I just got in from a morning hunt here in VA.I decided to sleep in since it was 21 degrees and and at daylight I couldn't stand it anymore.I had to get out and take Thors Hammer(My TC .444)for a stroll.I quickly got ready and headed to the farm which is just across the road.I decided to hunt this ridge i haven't hunted so far this year.I slowly crunched my way up the ridge in the frozen snow and cleared out a spot to sit.I quess it had been about a hour or so and I caught moevement heading my way.Sure enough it was two doe coming down the expected trail I had picked out.The wind had been right so far and this ole herd doe had different intewntions about what was swirling her way.She stopped 75 yds away facing me and comenced to stomp and then came the blow.Well I knew there was no chance on her coming any further my way.I slowly postioned my shootin stick and waited for some kind of shot opportunity.I had the 2x Leupold focused on her shoulder with her slightly quartering to me.I decided to let Thor rang out.I shot and deer scattered,I saw the doe i shot at ease off the ridge tail down.I couldn't decide if I had hit her or not.I waited about 10 minutes,I couldn't stand it any longer.I wwent where she was standing and Behold, hair everywhere.Grin...I looked around and found blood and in about 50 yds there she lay.Call it luck,I hit her right in the shoulder and the bullet came out the opposite side last rib back.I am having a great year with these pistpls and just love it.Sorry for the long read, but i really like sharing my stories with ya'll.I will post pics later....Merry Christmas  All

Very nice!!!  I have always entertained the thought of a 444.  Contender or Encore? What bullet did you use? Great shooting I look forward to the pics.  God Bless and have a Merry Christmas!

Danny,

Those Remington loads are too hot for your Contender. I'd stop using them right away before you have an accident. The .444 in the Contender is a touchy subject, it can be done but you need lower pressure loads than those used for the rest of the guns out there. The Contender frame is just not meant to take it. And no, having a G2 does not change anything.
I have one in .444 in a 10" tube and you can shoot it all day with proper loads. But if you are using factory loads you will have the frame ruined sooner or later and a high speed piece of brass headed toward your face.

Ron..I have had so many folks say its okay and thats why I am gonna start reloading anyhow.I really don't want to harm the gun or myself as far as that goes. Why are there many articles out there that say the factory loads are alright to use?I definitely will continue to research this more thourghly.I even had a custom gunsmith tell me the same.I hate being confused. Thanks for the info.I will probably just retire that setup till I reload my own.

Glad to hear of a succesful hunt.  This is the 1st year in 5 that I haven't bagged at least one.  My most prolific gun is the T/C 3030 with 14" bull barrel and muzzle tamer.
