Scopes usually ruin the quick handling ergonomics of a lever rifle. Consider peep sights from Lyman or Marbles.
I like deliberate well aimed shots, not snap shooting (not that I am criticizing those who do, by any means) so fast handling is not an issue. I already have a Winchester 94 in .45Colt with a Williams peep, and indeed I like it for close in shots combined with the lighter carrying weight. But even though I am not terribly old (only 31) my eyesight is not what we would call super, and more and more I am having to admit, as much as I like peep sights, that scopes are more practical options. They extend my range of shooting considerably over peep sights.
Oldshooter, I forgot about those XS scout mounts...hmmm, another option to consider.
