Schuster Adjustable Gas Plug for Garand
« on: January 01, 2011, 03:52:21 PM »
How do I correctly take out the original gas plug and install a new Schuster DCM Adjustable Gas Plug on my new Garand so that i can shoot factory ammo in it?  What steps should I take?

Thanks,

If you have a M-10 cleaning rod handle, (also referred to as a combination tool and comes with the cleaning kit that fits in the butt stock)  the screwdriver tip fits in the slot of the gas plug.  Use one section of the rod, insert it in the hole on the other end to use as leverage.  The gas plug will screw out easily once it breaks free.   If you don't have the M-10, then find a large flat tip screwdriver that fits the slot.  Make sure that the tip fills the slot or it usually will slip and may mar the plug.   I've had the Schuster plug on my garand for several years.  I reload for it and have it adjusted to one click past cycling the action.  I believe it helps reduce the pressure on the operating rod and spring.  Just follow the directions with the plug and you should have no problems.  What weight bullet are you planning on using?  Some factory ammo with heavier bullets may damage the operating rod so stay under 180 grains.  It's the pressure produced with slower burning powder that can bend the operating rod. I haven't shot any factory loads in a long time so I'm not up on what would be a good brand.  There are several threads on this board that takes up that issue.  If you need any further help just ask as there are good folks here that are glad to help.  By the way, the other end of the M-10 is used to disassemble the bolt when you need to replace the extractor/spring, the ejector/spring or firing pin.
