RL-12 and the 35 Whalen????
« on: January 01, 2011, 06:15:15 AM »
Has anyone ever used this powder??  I saw from load data that I could get nearly 2800fps with 225gr bullets....I can't seem to find any other data that validates this (wasn't willing to pay the 30 bucks to join).  I'd like to try to get 2700's with 225gr bullets if possible.  Currently using RL-15, 60gr in a Rem CDL with a 24" barrel and haven't chrono'd it yet.

What do you think???

That looks to be pushing the edge. My older Lyman Manual (47th) shows a max of 61.5 gr RL12 and 2722 fps with a 225gr. That would be too hot for me in my Rem. You might want to try IMR 4064, it shows about 2650 fps @ 60 gr, with lower chamber pressure. I would be hesitant to go over 60 gr of RL 12 either. Personally I use 57gr of RL15 and a 250gr which still beats factory by about 50fps and is not quite max, but is enough for my gun. I dont think wringing an extra 50-100 fps is worth the effort.

Just wondering....I already use RL-15 and just got my chrono back from Oehler.  Will test some at 58 - 59 - 60 - 61 and 62 and see what happens.
