Glock 22, or 17?

Wanting to get a Glock and can't decide between the 22 in .40 cal. or the 17 in 9mm.

Already have a couple of .45s for personal protection, so do not need it for that.

Thinking about a durable gun for woods walking, plinking. The only animal that it may be used for is possibly a Couger that got a little too close for my comfort. would like to hear your input, as I have never owned a Glock to date.

9mms are cheaper to shoot.

I have owned both. They are both great guns. If you do not own a Glock yet the Model 17 is a great place to start. Very reliable.

Well, Glock 22s easily convert to 9mm. You could carry it as a .40, and plink/practice with a 9mm conversion barrel.

Not all Glocks are great Glocks; not all Glocks are, 'perfect'.  This said, I consider G-17's to be a heck of a lot more, 'perfect' than any other model in Glock's lineup.  

The only other suggestion I'll offer is to go with the 3rd rather than 4th generation.  (IMO, Glock's new 4th generation needs a few years, yet, to, 'grow up'.) 


PS:  I don't trust any of the conversion pistols for serious work.  OK for the range; but, that's it.

Glock 22 if your planning on using it for defense purposes, 17 for target and plinking.  The .40 packs more punch, but the 9mm is cheaper to shoot.  Either way, you can't go wrong.  I have a .40, but I still want a 9mm in a 17!

+1 I used my 22 for Law Enforcement training never had a lick of trouble with it. Many of my classmates also used 22s in training with very few reliability issues, A few stovepipes (far and few in between after 1000s of round) but that is the extent of it, clear and back in action. I used mine on duty with highest of confidence that it would do what I needed it to do.

my opinion would to be to get  a 17. i have 8 glocks and my 17 is the most fun to shoot. just my 2cents worth

Get the 17.  Cheaper to shoot.  I recently hunted down and traded for a second generation GLOCK 17, because I have a large amount of cheap 9mm hardball ammo, and I'm starting to shoot an occasional IDPA match.  That and plinking is all it gets used for.

I may buy a either a Storm Lake or a Lone Wolf barrel to drop into my 17.  I have quite a bit of lead 9mm bullets, and don't want to tempt the kaboom gods by shooting it through a factory barrel. 

Which, BTW, is another reason to avoid the GLOCK 22.

in my experience the 22 is quite controllable- with a solid two-handed grip.  it's all over the place one handed.  I can tear stuff up at 15-20yds with confidence (fist-sized hole rapid-fire) via 22 but one handed I'd not be able to do much better than minute of man... deadeye is out of the question.  maybe a 9mm doesn't have that problem due to reduced recoil, but I think it's due to the slide being heavy and the frame being featherweight.  40s/w breaks wood and bricks well.
