.429" DIAMETER RIFLE BULLET?
« on: December 12, 2003, 04:43:17 PM »
I WAS WONDERING IF ANYBODY KNOWS OF A MANUFACTURER THAT PRODUCES A BULLET THAT ONE CAN USE IN A .44 MAGNUM THAT IS SHAPED LIKE A RIFLE BULLET.  I SHOOT A SINGLE SHOT ENCORE AND I WAS WONDERING IF I COULD GET AWAY FROM TRADITIONAL PISTOL BULLETS.  I WOULD LIKE SOMETHING WITH A BETTER BC.  IF THERE IS A BULLET OUT THERE LIKE THIS, HAS ANYBODY USED ONE?  IT MIGHT BE A STUPID QUESTION, BUT I'M CURIOUS. THANKS, TCTRAV.

Yes but why? Take a good hard look at the tables in the back of any good reloading manual. Out to 250 yards which is getting to be a real long shot for any .429" caliber gun there is not enough difference to matter. Only  when you pass 300 yards do the real slim trim shapes make a significant difference. Any .429" bullet of reasonable weight is gonna be short and fat no matter the nose shape.

CURRENTLY I'M SHOOTING A TC ENCORE .44 MAG WITH A 10" BARREL.  I'M NOT SURE OF THE TWIST RATE IN THE BARREL.  THE ONLY REASON I'M ASKING SUCH AN ODD QUESTION IS BECAUSE I WOULD LIKE TO BUY A CUSTOM BARREL.  SOMETHING LIKE A 18" .44 MAG.  THAT WAY I COULD USE THE BUTTSTOCK AND CARRY IT LIKE A CARBINE BUT STILL SHOOT IT AS A LONG BARRELED PISTOL.  JUST INTERESTED IN SOME SLIGHT VELOCITY GAINS AND BETTER ACCURACY OUT THE LONG BARREL.  THANKS FOR THE REPLIES.  TCTRAV.

Hey TCTRAV,try NORTHERN PRECISION at 315-493-1711.They make .429dia.  spitzer's from 240-350gr.On the plus side they will also place the crimp-groove where you want it,course with a single shot that dont matter. With a long throat you can seat them spit's out far and gain more powder space. If shooting out past 100yrds i would imagine a spitzer would easily out muscle a regular pistol bullet.Good luck!    Also TCTRAV if you want more velocity you should consider a barrel in 445 or even 444 marlin.

Encore Kathadin Barrel in .444 Marlin - 18", Tru-Glo sights, muzzlebrake.  Sounds like what you're looking for.  Also, I don't know if he still has it by cknight98 (I believe that's right) had a 16 1/4" .44 mag barrel for sale in the classifieds awhile back.

This is a topic I've tickled a time or 3 myself. Ofcourse for my .444 Marlin.
My main reasoning is some of the loads I have for it are mighty close to exceding the speed limit for pistol bullets. Wouldn't want to get a speeding ticket at the now. sheesh, might be expensive. A boat tail would be nice too for some serious extended range targeting. Which I would like to try with this round. I've even considered turning my own out of bronze solids. My only concern on this would be repeating the ogive precisely from one to the next to assure exact weight. Any ideas?

Hay 445 Supermag:  Are you sure about that telephone number for Northern Precision.  Local information says that number is listed for an individual, unless Northern Precision is a one-man operation working out of his home.  Would you please check that number again.  Thank you.  Mikey.
