The Shorty Strikes Back
« on: December 18, 2010, 10:19:10 AM »
I am really starting to love this .500 shorty.  Even though he only scores about 6 7/8 B&C  ;) he is my first buck of the year, and the first one the shorty has taken.   The 610 ranger rick went through about 4" of a felled pine tree about half way between me and him and still passed through!  Really impressed with this load/caliber/gun.

Congrats

Give us some details on the gun. Like what is the scope and the barrel band setup?

No Tim the pine wasnt on purpose.  I was hunting in my ground blind playing on my cell phone.  He caught me by surprise and I didnt have my gun ready when he walked in front of my shooting spot.  I blew, snorted, grunted , and whistled trying to get him to stop to no avail.  By the time I was able to draw a bead on him I was in a somewhat awkward position and he was halfway in some pretty thick brush.  I was about to lose my chance so I squeezed off not noticing the pine lying in my way.  It was about 25yds from me, and the deer was maybe another 20yds beyond that.  It was a bang-flop deal, and I almost swear the deer skidded a bit after hittin the ground. ;)  Lon, the scout mount and the barrel band are one-off custom jobs by my dad.  We were gonna go with one of the NECG bands, but they dont make one big enough.  The scope is a leupold M8 2.5x28 eer.  Rings are warne maximas.  Stocks are modified pw with brownells spray grit.  All metal is duracoated.  OAL 30.25" and weighs 5.5 lbs.  This setup works real well for me, and with the big heavy bullets the thing just shoots absolutely lights out.  It averages under an inch at 100yds and I have logged a .189" group.  With more magnification, it would be scary what this thing could do.  And CW, thats the entry hole!

Congrats!  and WOW that looks like a fun gun!
My FFL holder requires any firearms to be shipped to them via another FFL holder.  So, If I make an offer on a firearm please let me know if this is capable of being done from the start.  Please do NOT mark an item "SPF" to me until we "both" are happy with and in agreement on shipping, funds and the transaction in general.   Thanks

All this shorty talk and now this shorty 500 post.  Maybe I NEED to lighten my 500 a bit. ;) you know lighten it in the front by about six inches!!! LOL my buddie and I where talking last week about it. I think I would keep the lam stocks for the weight, maybe just shorten up the LOP so it's fast. With the forward scope there is no danger of my breaking my nose again!!! ;) maybe a new crown would help accuracy too, who knows. Goodness I love these rifles!!!

The more I look at it, the more I like your scout mount too! I just happen to have a weaver gunsmith mount. (12" rail no holes, just a radius) and a nice little Leupold M8 2X inthe shelf too.

Merry Christmas and A Happy and SAFE New Years to ALL, my GBO Brothers!!!

Well that's an interesting concept, preexpanding the slug by shooting thru trees before hitting the deer. ;D  Pretty impressive entrance hole ya got there.  Congrats on the 500, sounds like she is one sweet shooter.  DP

I've gotta agree with DP.  That is a superb tactic.  Shoot through a tree, expand the slug and then whomp the deer.  I had that happen one time, but the "tree" was the buck I was shooting at and it passed thru and killed a doe behind him too.  It was a .308 and passed through both of them.  Fortunately, I had a doe tag also.

Everytime I see a post come up in this thread it rekindled the shorty 500 idea for me!!! DARN YOU guys!!!!! ;)

I need to put the finishing touches on the maxi shorty first!!!  Been too cold for range time round here. At least the days I could get there!! Today is gonna be 50, but I'm sitting here in a PU truck at work today!!!

I had a "pre-expanded" experience Back when the 375Win was a brandy new caliber in a Marlin lever. I had shot a small buck thru the lungs and he humped up a bit and trotted away. I was not too impressed with the caliber after the shot. (I grew attached shortly after!) I couldn't get a second shot into him so decided to let him sit for a hour or so. In the mean time, my buddie came by and we talked and began looking. But blood ran out quickly and we started making circles but no deer was found. After a couple hours we gave up. I figured we might as well leave, as we stirred this area all up.
We went to breakfast and returned to the opposite side of the farm. It was my friends first trip to this side of the property, so I was showing him the lay of the land when I was certain I saw movement cross the tote rode a couple hundred yards in front of us. We didn't walk fifty yards and we saw blood in the road!! It had to be my buck!!!! We found where he cut in to the slash. Man was it thick! All beech trees like a million rowels. You could hardly walk threw it. I got a glimpse of him twenty yards ahead. I backed out and attempted to get around him. I saw him a couple more times but never had a clear shot. I then decided to see how it did "bustin brush" I mean he was mighty sick anyhow and it was getting thicker. If he lay down and sat tire I could walk rite by him easily. Anyway. He stopped long enough to get a bead of the front site on his shoulder and I sent a 250 "big bore" slug at him. Whack I herd the bullet strike! Down he went!! I let out a whoop as I HATE loosing a deer and this one was now mine!! Nothing specail but he was down and die g fast. My first shot was back of the lungs/ diaphragm. So he would have died but likely never be found. That bullet toppled atleast one finger sized soaking feet infront of the deer and still penetrated him thru and thru.

I found a blood trail this past season.  It wasn't my shot, and if someone else did it on my property, they weren't supposed to be there.  Anyhow, I followed it for about 100 yards and lost it.  I thought the eagles, ravens and crows would lead me to it, but it never happened.  That's the second time that has happened.  The first time I followed the blood across the beaver pond and went through the ice up to my neck, so I had to break off that search.  Again, I had no idea who took the shot or where.
