hammer extension for Encore

I can't find much information concerning which brands are good or bad. Would like to know what works good on a 50 cal. Encore muzzleloader. Anything will be much appricated.  Thanks Jenks

Hammer extensions on an Encore is a known reason for misfire problems. I would try to avoid using one.

If you get a light high grade one and install a heavier hammer spring you shouldn't have any problems as long as you don't have excessive headspace issues. I have one with several hundred rounds through it and not one problem. I mount my scopes as low as the gun allows and without my extension my encore would be worthless to me.

I ordered one from cabelas. I installed it and have shot probably 100 shots since then with no modifications and no misfires

I've got an encore in 7mm-08 with a spur I bought off of eBay a few years ago. All was good till this year it started misfiring occasionally. A quick google search points to a weak hammer spring factory supplied by T/C. If you contact T/C they will tell you to remove it... The fix I found was on (censored word) T/C. They offers a ton of info about T/C products. In my case I'm getting the Encore spring kit that has a Custom Trigger/Sear Spring, a (censored word) Custom "Speedlock" Hammer Spring, and a Custom Heavy Duty Locking Bolt Spring. The cost is $14.95 plus shipping. Like Said there is a ton of great info and "how to" on Mike (censored word)'s. Plan on spending some time reading through it all...

Or you can send it back to T/C and they will convert it to a pro-hunter swing hammer.

I have 2 on my tc handguns from the unmentionable person. each has 3 set screws and work perfectly. search "custom tc hammer extensions" and you will get many of the available extensions plus the "unmentionable one" .

I'm by no means an Encore or Contender guru, but I don't have an extention on my Encore.  With Warne Maxima bases and matching medium height rings both of my scopes sit hight enough that I've got plenty of purchase with my thumb, gloved or bare.  The scopes aren't riding too high either.

I just acquired an Encore in 7mm-08, and put a Zeiss Conquest 3 X 9 on Luppie dual-dovetail mounts, w/medium rings. Low is the word. The gun is super accurate, and the scope is extremely sharp. But.... the hammer hard to get at. I decided on a swing hammer.  Contacted TC. Spoke to a really nice person, who informed me it would be 10 weeks to get it back. 10 weeks?!!! Was also informed that the repair facility is closing and moving to Mass. - minus the employees. Man, are we in for a Marlin quality repeat? Anyway, decided that this was not the way to go, given what is going on with TC / Smith.  So, I ordered a light hammer spur from Stratton. Hope it arrives in less than the 10 weeks the swing hammer conversion would have taken.

I would send it back to TC to get the swing hammer.  Kind of pricy, but it is well worth it.  I had the same problem with my hammer so I got a hammer spur for it, I then realized that the scope was too low for the spur so I had to get new rings that were one size taller.  It fit (I thought) just barely until I changed the power of my scope (changed the amount of clearance of the eyepiece) and fired my rifle only to get a piece of something hit me in the face.  It was the thumb area of the hammer with the sput attatched, it had broke off after comming into contact with the scope (and put a nice little dent in my scope while it was at it).  So, I had a swing hammar put on it and I have had no problems since.  Even works with the shorter rings.

Wow, Mattl!! Thanks for the heads up.  Will have to make sure nothing touches when I install the spur upon arrival.  Hope I don't have that problem.  Cost of the job is not a problem.  It's the time my frame is gone from here, and possibility of it getting lost in this tumultous closing down and move to Mass. That, coupled with possible apathy, carelessness, and just plain sloppy workmanship by those facing losing their jobs, or new "trainees" playing with my frame that worries me.

I went to the range today and had many misfires.  I took the extension off and that was the end of them.  I think I will order the one from stratton.
