night hog lighting set up.
« on: June 28, 2010, 04:40:47 PM »
Hi everyone, I am invited on a hog hunt with a friend to TX in Jan. right after deer season ends. We want to do our hunting/shooting in the daylight but with all the expense of getting there I don't want to come home empty handed. So I made an LED red & green light set that can shine out to aprox 60-70 yds.
When you set up for evening hog hunting do you set up the lights beside you or do you set them out of the line of fire closer to the bait aimed at the bait and hunt from even farther back? I can either make the lights spot or flood, so could place them almost anywhere..... I just don't know what is "the norm". Do I want to be 40 yds from the bait or out to 75? I believe we will be in a ground blind, but with the deer hunters just being gone the feeders on the property should still be somewhat on the pigs mind. So we are going to try to get corn to those locations the minute we get there and then see where we get activity. I would like to hear how you do it, or how someone you know does it. Please share any tips you can.
Thank you, thejanitor

You're in for a treat if you've never night hunted pigs.  I hunt partly from a deer blind (comfy for an old man) and over fields from a raised platform on my truck.  By January your hog population has probably gone nocturnal after the deer season ruckus.  I wouldn't set up any closer than fifty yards--too easy to spook 'em.  The slightest wrong scent or sound and they're gone.  A red light that will reach out to 50 yards will give enough light to make out your pig and your crosshairs.  A 50mm scope objective helps gather light; a lighted reticule or dot, like a LiteSite, helps, too. Sitting in the dark, bring your rifle into shooting position-quietly-when you hear or suspect a visitor.  Have your buddy aim the light high before clicking it on, then lower the beam slowly until you can make the shot.  A clear night and moonlight changes things up, at least for me.  I forget the lights and go with a large objective lens scope.  You'd be suprised how well you can pick out targets with a good scope by moonlight.  There's the basics, anyway.  I've not used my bow yet, but that changes up things too.  A buddy who I have hooked into hunting is a "technical" sort, and is taking the fun a step further with NV gear.  Last Sunday night I stood behind him on the truck platform, in full dark, and "watched" him drop a nice sow about 200 yards across a field.  He'd hooked up a NV to his .270's scope.  He also put a flash hider on so the blast wouldn't wipe out his vision.  I think he's getting the knack--

Good hunting,
Dennis In Ft Worth

My lights go on top of the scope.  And I use white light.  8)

If you have cameras that use a flash the light does not startle the hogs.

Also, I have used a Max Million II 2 million candle light when we were walking to light up hogs on a feeder, they did not flinch.

I think the wind is more of an issue than the light or light color.

You can get amber or red magnetic lights and put the on bottom of your feeder. The lights are dim enough that they wont bother the Hawgs. That is good enough for about 100 yards with a good scope.

As a very good resource , besides GBO, is TEXASBOARS.COM.  Those boys have been killing (a lot of) Texas hogs - at night - for decades.  They have built lighted rigs, discussed lighted rigs, and sell lights that work for them.  Research thier archives and you won't be dissatisfied.

Personally, I don't hunt at night - and have no difficulties with those that do; have watched with amazement some of the NV and IR scoped hunting videos for night hogs posted on the Net and find it fascinating and intriguing, but "Owning the Night" equipment is EXPENSIVE!

I would love to have some of the high end stuff, but it is far too rich for my blood.  When new generation technology improves and the old prices drop (meaning I get real old and the old technology isn't in Vogue anymore) I might reconsider.

No, probably not.  I just am not that enamored with staying on them after dark.  The WORK starts after the shot.  Pretty cool though for your younger guys...

The hogs where I hunt are pretty light shy, especially the bluish white light from the led spotlights. I may color my lense with something. I often go hunting though when the moon is big and lighting up the area pretty goo. Then all you need is a good scope.

I have shot two hogs at night in the last week.I haven't seen a hog during the daytime for a year.I use one of the hawglights Destroyers red led works out past 100 yards.I also have one of Kevins Texasbores light that will light up a foot ball field its hot.I don't have the room to use it where I hunt.I love hunting at night but not at this temperature. As a Christmas present I got one of the feeder lights that mounts to the leg of the feeder, pretty weak for what they paid for it.Of course everbody wants to buy a green laser I did,it won't work with my older Leupold scope, somewhat better with my newer 50 mm scopes. Not near good as the Destroyer. Tent lights work but the hogs seem to stay away from the white light.I like to kill hogs.Chuck
