Raise the Debt?

Well, Geithner has sent a letter to Congress, telling them, that if they don't raise the debt ceiling soon, the govt. will run out of money sometime between the end of March, and the first part of May.(No Kidding, I'ld have never thought that!!) Seems that some jobs might get lost.(Really??)
They might start with the Depts. of Education,Energy,Foreign Aid, United Nations,(Maybe that falls under Foreign Aid, even thou it's in New York City) Farm subsidies, make the Unions pay into Obama care, cutting all the benefits and retirement, to all the politicians, and federal employees, to say, $20,000 a year and they get Medicare just like the voters.
I know there are a few others that could be cut, but that would start the ball rolling. gypsyman

Geithner must be an idiot...the government ran out of money about 13 trillion dollars ago.
They need to lower the ceiling.  And yes...a whole bunch of government operations will shut down...but hey..it's THER TURN to shut down.  No biggy to me.
I rememeber back when we had a governor here many years back that shut down a bunch of government programs and welfare, and then cut our property taxes in half.
All the socialists were screaming bloody murder and saying poor would be turned into the street along with the sick...never happened, and Michigan went into the black and out of debt for once.  Only ones out of work were government employees.  Man, that was a long time ago.  We sure been on a different path since then.

Wonder how much aid to countries not supporting us could be cut out ? Maybe some is protected by treaty ? The arts , if they can't support themselves maybe Americans don't care to waste cash on them. Education is a State issue anyway. Wonder also if cities or states that were bankrupt were allowed to default would the people sucking the life out of them move on ?
At some point we must pay the piper .

The cuts mentioned so far would be a drop in a swimming pool. If serious cuts are going to be made it will have to be the military, social security, medicaid and medicare. Those three make up 62% of the federal budget. Do we have the stomach to do it, I doubt it.

So close bases in countries that don't support us or charge them to keep it open. I think if one would look at adminstration cost that are a waste alot could be saved.

The problem with waiting to pay the piper is it usually involves payment from those who didn't attend the concert.

ALL foreign aid should be stopped yesterday. Why does this nation give away tax dollars, and then, borrow money to replace what they give away? Thats like giving away your paycheck to fund some bum, and living on credit cards. If foreign aid is part of a treaty, break the treaty. The gooberment didn't have a problem with breaking treaties in the 19th century to "improve" their position.  

 Defund ALL unConstitutional federal agencies, housing, education, batfe,energy. Payoff all monies that an individual has been forced to contribute to the SS admin, to those who have contributed to it, and then shut the doors. Return federal properties not required for defense and governing,back to the states. Reduce coorporate taxes by 80%. Stop federal education grants, with the exception of the GI Bill. Defund anything that ends with "Commission".Stop social services to, and Deport ALL Illegals. Combine FBI and US Marshalls. Repeal NAFTA,CAFTA and any other trade treaty, start from scratch and balance/limit trade with the GDP. Get out of and send the un to a different nation.That should get things started.

I get so tired of libs saying this or that program only costs us a few million. If it is a giveaway, I don't care if it only costs us $10.00. I say shut it down. Those living off of the backs of taxpayers can starve in the dark as far as I am concerned. Maybe if we allowed most of the leeches of society to die it would help upgrade the gene pool as well. Does that sound heartless? Too bad. We can't AFFORD to have a heart anymore.

If you just stopped all social services there would be major rioting/looting across the nation, it would need to be some sort of gradual process. In all reality I don't think that we could afford to deport all illegals. It would cost many a billion to just locate, round up, detain and return them and they would just be back in a few days or weeks. Lets see, how many billions has been spent so far in just the last few years to try to seal the boarders? It has worked really well too. :(

Let's face it, if we were talking about your own personal budget, you'd cut the low hanging fruit first before you went after the hard stuff. You'd look at the things that were easy, that weren't a priority to you, that wouldn't hurt much. If it helps to clear the desk to get the fluff out of the budget, so we can get a better vision of the larger issues, go for it. But guzzi is right, defense-ss-medi is the big elephant. I've heard some sound thinking that would make all 3 of those manageable and fair for the future, that wouldn't require massive debt or raising taxes, but it would require a change in philosophy.

I'm sure a lot of folks would love to be able to vote for their own personal debt ceiling, and set their own credit rating. Our creditors (aka bond holders, like China) won't be real happy if we raise our ceiling, and they may let us know that by a dip in the value of the dollar, increased tariffs on our feeble exports. So I say let it ride, feel the burn, keep the dollar strong, and see what happens.

As near as I can tell, there are 2 paths to hyperinflation. 1 is printing more money, 2 is devaluing the dollar. We control #1, but our creditors control #2. I'd rather not give them cause to do so, clean up our own house, and demonstrate we're a good risk. So that would mean we keep the ceiling where its, don't print more money ourselves, but we make the necessary changes to our operating costs to get us under control. It'll hurt, sure. The first rule of getting out of a hole is to stop digging.

Well, I believe this country, is in a position, very much like a patient in a hospital. Gangrene has set in, and if we don't cut the leg off, so to speak, the patient is going to die. If this govt. keeps doing what it's been doing, how long before we drive off the cliff?
We're already over $45,000 in debt for every man,woman and child in this country now, it's got to stop. gypsyman
