Handi ATI collapsible for youth?
« on: January 07, 2011, 06:24:25 PM »
I just intro'd myself in another thread - I have picked up two handi's recently. One of them is a 243 that's going to be a kids' first rifle. We have 4 kids so it'll get plenty of use. But it currently is a fullsize wood stocked version. I'd like to be able to get at least a youth buttstock for it but was wondering about the ati collapsible butt stock/forend combo?

Do you think the ATI would serve the needs of varying sized younguns? Also, the 243 has std contour barrel so would you recommend the heat shield?

What else would you recommend? I could also cut this wood stock down but I have reservations about doing that. I'm in Canada and handi stuff isn't nearly as easy to get or trade. We can't even get accessory barrels up here afaik - and if we can I imagine it would be pretty pricey.

I had a 22Hornet that had a youth stock, I just added a Limbsaver slip on recoil pad to lengthen the stock for grownups. However, if i had it over again, i would have a wood stock, trim an inch, making a 13" LOP for the smallest child, and then reattach the standard recoil pad, then add a slip-on pad for adult use. An adjustable ATI I am sure would be a good solution for some added $. Good luck.

I think you would be better off with trimming your would stocks. Maybe buy a used set of youth stocks. I have yet to see a good reveiw of the collaspable stocks(I stand corrected). If you dig around I think there is a couple post about them.  ;) Good luck.

Lonny

PS thanks for bringing more youth into shooting.

A few years ago I bought my nephew a superlight .223. I put an ATI collapsable stock on it and it worked great.  As he got older and bigger we just extended the stock another notch.  No problems with it at all.  In my opimion, this is exactly what the ATI stock should be used for.  Why else would you need a tactical stock on a single shot rifle?
Just my opinion.

There is a couple stories on here about these stocks collapsing under recoil. This is a scary proposition when you consider the optical end of the scope gets mighty close to your eye. One member got many stitches form this happening.

Personally I wouldn't own one. But if you must, PLEASE limit the caliber to the .223s recoil and use as a scope with as much eye relief as you can.

Here's the pic of the guy that had an adjustable stocked 12ga turkey gun collapse on him.

Hi everyone. I have never posted on here before, but have read a ton of stuff and enjoyed it all. However, I just had to reply about the ATI stocks. I've had one on my 20 ga tracker slug/Huntsman frame for about 4 years now and each barrel is scoped with a normal ( 3-4 in) eye relief scope. All total there has got to be at least 800 rounds of hard recoil on this stock without any failures. As a retaired Army soldier, I carried an M16/M4 for a long time with this type of stock. There were occasions when that stock would collapse, but that was due to the locking detent on the stock not being seated fully after a manual extension/collapse...operator error/carelessness, not equipment failure.

...and for the record, I did get a PM from another member here who said something similar. It was also recommended to insert a spacer as insurance.

One thing I did to mine was to cut/fit and glue a piece of 1 inch pipe insulation to the top to keep some of the recoil off my cheek/jaw. The slug gun has an 18 in barrel, is only 6 lbs fully dressed , and with Buckhammers it will get your attention. The M/L with itslonger/heavier barrel is a lot more friendy to shoot. Both barrels still wear the wood forearms.

I put one on a Handi .44 Mag and it was gone within two weeks.  It wiggled, felt like a toy gun and harsh on recoil.......goodbye.

I don't even like the collapsible/adjustable stocks on an AR.  That being said, I have one AR with one, just so my grandson (10), his dad (31), and I (Older than God's dog) can all shoot it.  If you can live with the wiggles and be carefull with engagement of the stops, it will work fine.  It is much easier to teach a kid to shoot with a gun that fits than one he has to make allowances to shoot.  If he learns bad habits/poor form to accomodate a too long stock, his marksmanship will suffer for ever.
